Before the implementation of SAP Sustainability Control Tower, data entry was entirely manual. Collecting data from different sources created inconsistencies and made consolidation difficult. Centralizing our data onto a single platform allows for better collaboration and faster decision-making and, most importantly for us, builds a data-driven culture.

Taming the Amazon’s complex ESG data landscape

Environmental initiatives designed to preserve and sustain the Amazon “with and for all people” are at the heart of Fundação Amazônia Sustentável (FAS). Evaluating forest biodiversity, enhancing socioeconomic benefits, and improving the quality of life for Amazonian populations drive the efforts of its employees, volunteers, partners, and supporters.

Due to decentralized, spreadsheet-based processes and no automation for tracking or reporting, FAS had to manually enter data collected from more than 5,000 large-scale participatory programs and projects. Short on time and resources, the organization also needed to standardize, centralize, and leverage this valuable ESG data collected to share with funding stakeholders.

To make the best decisions possible for the Amazonian community, FAS wanted to transform itself into a data-driven nongovernmental organization (NGO). This goal required organizing, analyzing, and reporting program data. The solution came through a long-standing partnership that helped bridge the gap between sustainability innovation and environmental impact.

Communicating relevant results to stakeholders allows us to expand and continue the programs and projects that are vital to the Amazonian population. SAP Sustainability Control Tower provides the level of detail we need to not only report but also steer our initiatives.

Stewarding the Amazon by demonstrating impact with ESG data relevance

An integral part of FAS’s success is selecting the most impactful indicators for tracking projects and programs. These measurements profoundly influence funding and carry significant environmental and social weight.

With the SAP Sustainability Control Tower solution, donated by SAP, FAS gained the ability to centralize, monitor, and analyze critical ESG data in a customized way. This advantage enhances transparency and guides strategic decisions.

The solution’s dashboard allows team members to assess institutional emissions, track the organization’s carbon footprint, and steer mitigation efforts more strategically. In addition, it helps FAS centralize ESG indicator data on a dedicated system. This consolidation increases the visibility, reliability, and consistency of information across the organization.

Using SAP Sustainability Control Tower, FAS has adopted a brand-new approach to its mission, where data informs decision-making, strategic planning, and organizational goals. Clear results can now be confidently communicated to stakeholders in a manner that demonstrates impact with tangible relevance.

Modern data management technologies expand our capacity to serve the Amazonian population and understand the effectiveness of our programs. We can also provide greater transparency to supporters, donors, and partners through a broader, more integrated view of investments and socioenvironmental impact.

Creating a data-driven culture with metrics and reliable reporting

Through technology, education, and volunteering, SAP has supported FAS for over a decade.

With the implementation of SAP Sustainability Control Tower, the organization can significantly advance its data governance and sustainability efforts. Among the milestones achieved are the selection of 15 strategic KPIs that monitor essential areas, such as deforestation rates, production chain revenue, participation in environmental services programs, and overall socioeconomic development. The transparency of ESG data has also greatly improved through the use of a single solution, making program validation and proactive sustainability initiatives far more effective. Additionally, internal teams have been engaged and trained to collect, analyze, and interpret data with more precision, reducing the data collection time frame from three weeks to one week.

To further support this comprehensive approach to data governance, FAS is growing its data team to strengthen integration between legacy systems and institutional databases. This priority has led to new guidelines that elevate data quality, security, standardization, and responsible use. These policy refinements are laying a solid foundation for a data-driven culture rooted in transparency and efficiency.

Promoting prosperity through sustainability

Sustainable development in the Amazon requires a steady flow of funding for new and ongoing initiatives. This means FAS must navigate the complexities of Brazilian public policy, socioeconomic and cultural diversities, and the effects of climate change.

To gain this support, FAS must not only expand and strengthen partnerships but also continually identify and assess program indicators that build socioenvironmental resilience, especially those tied to climate adaptation and mitigation in the region.

A planned advancement is the development of a direct beneficiary indicator to track segmentation across different audience categories. This deeper level of ESG data will help FAS prevent program overlaps and improve communication throughout the region it serves. The organization also aims to empower individuals to become agents of change by giving Amazonian communities access to education, training, and resources.

Demonstrating the benefits of its programs is crucial for securing future investment and support. With operational accountability in mind, FAS is exploring additional SAP Sustainability solutions to enable operational compliance and carbon accounting. The organization will continue its mission to conserve the Amazon by promoting prosperity through sustainability—taking care of the people who take care of the forest.
