Tasting the future of sustainable growth through eco-innovations
What began as an idea between two brothers to open a small seed shop has since taken root and grown into a global empire. Today, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (known as CP Foods), is a Thai agroindustrial and food conglomerate operating in 17 countries, exporting to 50 countries, and crossing five continents to reach over four billion consumers. True to the Charoen Pokphand name, which means “prosperity for customers” and “prosperity in food,” the company has built its business on the promise to provide food and resources that benefit consumers.
CP Foods’ business is centered around three main categories: feed, farm, and food. The company promotes sustainable food security and traceability throughout its value chain. From raw-materials sourcing and feed production to livestock farming and food production, the company’s objective is to provide consumers with high-quality, safe, and environmentally friendly food products. Cultivating sustainability at every touch point in the food journey, CP Foods is also committed to combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
To realize its net-zero goals of reducing 42% of scope 1 and 2 emissions and 30.3% of scope 3 emissions by 2030, the company needed to implement solutions that could streamline GHG data and enable regulatory compliance. It also looked to create an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting system that was accurate, auditable, and consistent across the organization. Establishing an integrated foundation to support this global giant required a digital transformation comprised of multiple, interoperable solutions.

Serving up Sustainovation with a helping of SAP solutions
Phase one of CP Foods’ digitalization project focused on its feed business unit in Thailand. The business unit is integrated with other parts of the company, including animal breeding and farming, and its feed supply chain is the backbone that connects farming practices with food production. The goal of the project was to strengthen data quality, collection, accessibility, and end-to-end traceability—from the raw material source, to farmers, to its feed business.
The implementation team concentrated on calculating scope 3 emissions across CP Foods’ value chain, upstream transportation, and distribution processes. The objective was to enable access to data-infused insights to drive efficiency, support responsible sourcing, and align with the company’s Sustainovation vision. To accomplish this, the team enlisted a dedicated management team at CP Foods to control data across disparate systems, and it coordinated with the company’s business and IT stakeholders responsible for the net-zero program.
Experts from SAP, including a program manager and chief solution architect, served as primary points of contact for the CP Foods executive team—leading and managing the project lifecycle from planning through post-go-live. This included managing project governance, quickly resolving any issues, and helping ensure that the company’s SAP solution architecture was designed to accurately reflect its business requirements and use cases as well as SAP standards.
During each phase of the implementation, the SAP experts also worked closely with partner YASH Technologies, who provided significant functional and technical resources to help ensure a successful and smooth go-live.
Ultimately, CP Foods implemented the SAP Sustainability Control Tower and SAP Sustainability Footprint Management solutions, as well as the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, EHS environment management solution, part of SAP Cloud ERP solutions. This multitiered solution approach provides sustainability-based insights into business processes. It also supports compliance with carbon regulations in various markets, including the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) tariff and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) climate risk disclosures.

Crafting a green menu with sustainability built into every bite
Automating data collection using SAP Sustainability Control Tower has turned a once-cumbersome, manual process into a centralized ERP-centric system. This transformation has established an accurate and auditable system of record for scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The solution also provides GHG metrics that directly inform sustainability performance. CP Foods can now generate ESG reports, such as CBAM reports, to meet current and upcoming regulatory requirements.
SAP Sustainability Footprint Management calculates corporate-level carbon emissions for scope 1, 2, and 3, enabling CP Foods to achieve carbon footprint transparency. This calculation includes forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) and non-FLAG emissions in compliance with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards. The company has achieved carbon clarity in its feed business by leveraging existing master and transactional data from SAP S/4HANA Cloud for EHS environment management. With SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, CP Foods can now identify hot spots, make reduction adjustments, and determine the carbon impact of its animal feed business across the organization globally. Enhancing CP Foods’ sustainability landscape with SAP S/4HANA Cloud for EHS environment management also enabled operational compliance and alignment through an accurate, centralized system of record for assessing, monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing air, water, and waste processes.
In addition, the ability to collect and calculate scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions allows CP Foods to replace inefficient systems with renewable energy sources, reducing GHG emissions, water usage, and industrial waste.
Feeding sustainability to create an eco-first future
CP Foods remains committed to making sustainability the key ingredient in every step of the farm-to-fork journey. The company will continue to leverage smart technology, embrace renewable energy, promote sustainable practices, and source responsibly to help ensure food security, accessibility, and affordability.
The decision to choose SAP Sustainability solutions was driven by the leaders of the company’s sustainability strategy and the net-zero program based on a shared goal for an integrated, scalable IT platform that can expand into other processes. This includes plans to implement the SAP Green Ledger solution to enable product-level carbon footprint calculations and, eventually, material traceability.
Recognizing the holistic value of SAP Sustainability solutions—from efficient data management and compliance to driving meaningful change and mitigating future risks—CP Foods will leverage new capabilities as it charts its course toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
