Adam Foods: Baking data visibility into sustainable packaging
Addressing local regulations with a global solution
Sustainability is a top priority for Adam Foods, which is why the company is focusing on packaging—because what goes outside is just as important as what goes inside. Using the SAP Responsible Design and Production solution, the company has gained the visibility it needs to address evolving global environmental regulations, starting with Spain’s plastic tax.

Evaluating what’s outside by starting with the data inside
With more than a century of making and marketing cookies, broths, pâtés, pastries, honey, and bread, Adam Foods bakes sustainability into every tasty bite. The company carefully selects sustainable ingredients to optimize the nutritional profile of its products. Based in Barcelona, Spain, Adam Foods serves customers in more than 75 countries, from local corner shops to global grocery chains.
Prompted by the Spanish plastic tax, Adam Foods saw an opportunity to go beyond regulatory compliance and expand its international reporting capabilities while ensuring circularity principles continue to guide its decision-making.
With a strong commitment to reducing environmental impact through sustainable food production, the company needed a solution to provide centralized packaging data, automate manual tax-form generation, and make tracking more efficient.
Leveraging the existing landscape to centralize and consolidate data
Self-described as equal parts critics and perfectionists, Adam Foods knows how to hone what works and help what needs improvement. The company chose the SAP Responsible Design and Production solution and enlisted Minsait, a recognized and respected SAP partner, to lead the implementation.
Phase one focused on collecting packaging data from the food company’s business operations and suppliers. By analyzing the logistics chain, Adams Food could produce a single, centralized packaging data source. The new functionality included the ability to calculate and report on extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees and plastic taxes. The implementation would also improve document and invoice tracking, which emerged as a critical issue early on.
Leveraging its existing landscape built on the SAP ERP application would support a smooth integration, data reuse, and improved portfolio insights and exposure forecasting.
Boosting visibility with access to sustainability and financial data
Gaining visibility into its packaging materials was the sweet spot for Adam Foods. With one master data source, Adam Foods can now analyze regulatory impacts on packaging throughout its supply chain. The results provide material recommendations, helping evolve packaging toward more environmentally friendly models. The company can calculate plastic tax fees, generate tax forms in-house, and proactively manage and meet Spain’s plastic tax obligations in compliance with European Union regulations.
Solution dashboards also provide detailed operational reporting—aggregated by country, regulation, and data characteristics. Integrated ERP data, enhanced visibility, and improved logistic document and invoice traceability deepen the company’s EPR commitment and compliance.
What’s more, with reliable master and transactional data now available, Adam Foods expects to recover 100% of its solution investment due to reduced tax liability.

Encouraging small actions to create a positive, collective impact
Rooted in the belief that small, collective actions produce huge results over time, Adam Foods established a sustainability strategy known as Gotitas. Its recipe for success is based on demonstrating sustainability by integrating environmental, social, and governance criteria aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable development in daily activities and decision-making.
Looking ahead, Adam Foods is planning to roll out SAP Responsible Design and Production to Portugal, Hungary, Romania, and Poland in phase two. The company is also proactively anticipating upcoming regulations, such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. Adam Foods is staying ahead of additional Spanish regulations by continuing to incorporate supplier sustainability data, running analytics to obtain deeper insights, and training users to create different EPR reports.
A critical link between sustainability and human health is food—how it’s produced, processed, and packaged. Adam Foods hopes its “small actions” are setting a strong example globally, encouraging companies all over the world to rethink their packaging strategies, go beyond compliance, and invest in circular solutions.
