Joule Agents are purpose-built AI agents that automate well-defined, multi-step enterprise workflows across your organization. They are accessed through Joule Assistants— an orchestration layer that uses deep role and process context to coordinate agents and execute complex work autonomously, like smart teammates. There is no separate charge for Joule Assistants; pricing is based entirely on the underlying agents they run.

SAP's AI model is organized around three layers: Base AI (included with every SAP cloud subscription), Premium AI (purchased via AI Units), and Custom-Built AI.

Base AI is the foundational AI included with every SAP cloud subscription at no additional cost. No AI Units are required, and no separate activation is needed. It's available to all users from day one.

Premium AI is where AI moves beyond everyday assistance to executing real business work. It is centered on AI agents—autonomous systems that run processes, trigger workflows, and carry out complex tasks on behalf of your organization. It also includes high-value AI services and SAP Joule for Consultants, the only remaining per-user offering.

Custom-built AI is SAP's platform for organizations that want to develop their own agents, applications, and workflows beyond packaged offerings. Running custom-built agents in a productive Joule Studio runtime environment is free through the end of 2026.

AI Units are SAP's single virtual currency for accessing and running Premium AI capabilities across SAP solutions. Purchased annually via SKU 8019164, they sit in one shared pool and can be used flexibly across all Premium AI capabilities.

 

AI Units are consumed only when Premium AI actively performs work — such as agents executing tasks or documents being indexed. SAP Joule for Consultants uses a fixed allocation of 35 AI Units per user per month. Unused AI Units expire after 12 months. Base AI does not consume AI Units.

All SAP-delivered autonomous enterprise agents in 2026 are priced at 0.02 AI Units per agent action. An agent action is a single step an agent takes to complete a task — such as calling a service, triggering a workflow, or generating a response. A task may require multiple actions depending on complexity. When an agent is not running, no AI Units are consumed.

Each assigned user is charged 35 AI Units per month, which includes a pooled request allowance of 22,900 requests per user per month. Requests are pooled across all users, so unused capacity offsets higher usage by others. If the total pooled allowance is exceeded, additional requests are billed at 2 AI Units per 1,000 requests. The number of assigned users can be adjusted monthly.

SAP for Me is your central hub for activating AI capabilities and tracking AI Unit consumption, balances, and billing in near real time.

SAP for Me provides near real-time visibility into your consumption. If you approach or exceed your purchased volume, you can proactively deactivate agents or features directly in SAP for Me to stop further usage. If you choose to keep services running, additional usage is billed under excess-use (pay-per-use) terms at the applicable AI Unit rate.

SAP is evolving its AI commercial model later this year to align pricing more closely with the work AI actually performs. Here is what is coming and what it means for you.

 

What is changing:

  • Most generative AI capabilities currently requiring AI Units will move into Base AI at no extra cost — significantly expanding the AI value included in your standard SAP cloud subscriptions.

  • The per-user-per-month packages (Joule Premium for Finance, HCM, Supply Chain, Spend Management, and Customer Experience) are being retired as their features move into Base AI. SAP Joule for Consultants is the only per-user offering remaining in Premium AI.

  • Premium AI is being refocused on AI agents. As AI increasingly executes work autonomously rather than simply assisting users, pricing reflects the actions an agent performs — not the number of users with access. This makes costs transparent and directly tied to the work AI delivers.

What customers need to do:

  • ·Capabilities already activated and in use will continue without interruption.

  • ·Customers will go through a simple terms acceptance process as part of the Base AI transition. You will be guided through this step by step.
