Consolidating and aligning a fragmented ESG data landscape

As the largest sugar cane farming and manufacturing corporation in Eswatini, The Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES) models its mission after the rich heritage of the town of Simunye, which means “We are one.” In addition to evoking the spirit of connectedness, this mission solidifies the company’s goal to competitively and sustainably add value for all stakeholders.

Sugar is a critical part of the Eswatini economy, accounting for nearly 25% of exports. RES engages more than 3,500 internal and third-party farmers and 4,500 employees to produce two-thirds of the country’s sugar and more than 35 million liters of ethanol each year.

To further its commitment to long-term sustainability, RES needed a robust data management and reporting solution for environmental, social, and governance data that was tailored to its unique operational needs. This would help it fulfill the company’s sustainability strategy while also staying compliant and aligned with industry market trends.

Centralizing ESG data to create sustainability KPIs and automate reports

As a key contributor to the regional sugar supply chain, RES needed a cohesive way to capture and illustrate ESG data across the various stages of sugar production. The ability to generate company-specific reports while meeting compliance obligations required a scalable, future-ready solution.

To achieve these goals, RES implemented the SAP Sustainability Control Tower solution to help it consolidate and integrate ESG data. The solution provides comprehensive ESG metric configuration, calculation customization, and automated reporting, allowing RES to leverage predefined metrics and design tailored KPIs specific to its operations.

Exceptional collaboration and alignment between SAP’s adoption team and SAP partner msg global solutions helped RES achieve important milestones with a customized deployment, addressing the company’s unique business requirements.

With SAP Sustainability Control Tower and msg global on our side, we can now continuously strengthen our sustainability footprint, improve reporting, and stay aligned with global frameworks and customer expectations. Many thanks for the professional implementation and ongoing support.

Realizing the sustainability advantages of consolidated ESG data

By harmonizing operational ESG data using SAP Sustainability Control Tower, RES improved reporting accuracy and transparency. The company can leverage the solution’s industry-specific templates, interactive charts, and comparative views, replacing manual processes with automated reporting capabilities. With a centralized ESG data hub, the company created 25 standard and four tailored KPIs, improving transparency while empowering strategic, data-driven decisions. RES also formed a scalable framework aligned with its sustainability goals.

Operational data now supports the company’s ESG objectives and external reporting requirements, enhancing governance and stakeholder trust. With its investors in mind, RES produced its first sustainability report in 2024/2025 with a dedicated section outlining its objectives. The integrated report will help keep stakeholders informed and aligned with the company’s sustainability strategy.

Crystallizing a future where sustainability benefits all

Managing ESG data across fields, mills, and village estates is a major challenge in the agribusiness sector. By enabling a more centralized, automated, KPI-driven approach, RES furthered its commitment to long-term sustainability management and reporting.

Future project phases include enhanced reporting capabilities and advanced data integration. KPIs will increase over time with continued automation and efficiencies, providing enriched reporting depth and insights. The company is also considering additional SAP Sustainability solutions that can help it calculate and integrate emissions data.

RES remains committed to its regional sustainability initiatives, including adopting precision agricultural technology for increased efficiency and resource conservation, and investing in renewable energy production. The agribusiness is also exploring corporate social projects with the hope of producing new revenue streams for local communities.
