That’s why openness andopen source are fundamental to SAP’s AI strategy. We build on frontier open source models such asMistral-3, we contribute innovation back to thecommunity with assets like our tabular foundationmodel sap-rpt-1-oss, and we actively supportcross-industry collaborations from the LinuxFoundation’s agent-to-agent initiative, to our recentmembership in the Agentic AI Foundation. Open-ness isn’t just a principle for us, it’s the mechanismthrough which we ensure our AI creates meaningful, scalable value for our customers.Dr. Philipp Herzig,CTO of SAP SE

Across AI, security, and cloudplatforms, the global community strengthenedthe practices that are needed to buildtechnology that is open, trustworthy, andresilient at scale. Open source is no longeroptional for enterprise innovation - it’sessential.SAP’s engagement reflects this shift. We focusnot only on contributing code, but on shapingthe ecosystems, standards, and fundingmodels that make open innovation viablein the long term. The maturation of open source AI marked a keyinflection point this year: Thanks to greaterclarity around definitions and governance, open models moved from experimentation toenterprise relevance. SAP contributed to thisprogress by releasing sap-rpt-1-oss, a tablenative foundation model for relational businessdata, openly available to the researchcommunity and designed for transparency andauditability in core business scenarios.Financial sustainability was another definingtheme of 2025. It became clear that criticaldigital infrastructure cannot rely on goodwillalone. SAP supported the move towardstructured public and private responsibility byadvocating for an EU Sovereign Tech Fund andby launching SAP’s central open source fund, providing direct financial support to thosewho maintain the open source components onwhich we depend.Security and sovereignty increasinglyconverged. As new regulatory requirementstook effect, SAP introduced the Fork MetadataStandard to improve software supply chaintransparency and Software Bill of Materials(SBOM) integrity. In parallel, we strengthenedEurope’s open cloud ecosystem by co-founding the NeoNephos Foundation underLinux Foundation Europe and by transferringkey cloud native projects to a neutral, vendor-independent home.Open source is driven by people andsustained by shared responsibility. We thankevery contributor outside and inside SAP whohelped move the ecosystem forward in 2025.Together, we are building the foundation for asecure, sovereign, and open digital future, onecontribution at a time.ForwordPeter GieseDirector of SAP Open SourceProgram Office
