SAP stepping up to fight climate change

For over a decade now, climate action has been at the top of SAP’s corporate sustainability agenda. We aim to take climate action through our dual approach as enabler and exemplar to help pave the way toward a low-carbon future for our customers, partners, and SAP, and create impact within planetary boundaries.

Transition plan for Climate Change Mitigation

Our net-zero commitment is the cornerstone of our climate change mitigation. Under this commitment, we aim to reduce our gross greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 90% across our entire value chain by 2030. The net zero target has been validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which also verified that SAP’s target is compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5°C as advocated by the Paris Agreement. SAP’s ambitious climate change mitigation commitment has also been recognized also by the investment market, as demonstrated by SAP’s inclusion in the EU Paris-aligned benchmarks. SAP’s decarbonization and transformation plan tackles four main areas; Cloud transformation, Upstream supply chain, Own operations, and Carbon removals.

Net Zero Targets for the SAP Executive board

To reflect the importance the Company attaches to achieving net zero, we made this target part of the Executive Board’s long-term incentive (LTI). Once a year, the Supervisory Board assesses and approves the targets for the next tranche of the LTI.

Still moving beyond our own operations: Net Zero by 2030

Our ambition:

Since 2023 we aim for reaching net zero across our value chain in line with a 1.5°C future by 2030 – 20 years earlier than originally planned.

To monitor and steer our accelerated science-based target, we measure the gross emissions along our value chain. The results from 2023 mark the baseline for reducing our emissions by 90% by 2030 in line with the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard.

Reducing energy consumption reduces our environmental impact

We aim to increase the share of renewable energy in our upstream and downstream value chain by working together with our suppliers with a specific focus on our hyperscale providers and customers and by constantly improving the data quality in our carbon calculations.

Waste Management

We're committed to continue working toward mutual sustainability targets

SAP aims to support the transform the economy into a low-carbon, circular system to achieve zero waste and cleaner oceans. Since SAP already reached its zero-waste target in 2023, we have committed to continue to divert more than 90% of the electrical and electronic waste generated within our own operations from incineration, landfill, and nature. SAP’s consideration of its environmental impact goes beyond our own operations: we partner with IT asset lifecycle companies to provide a correct end-of-life treatment for our electrical and electronic equipment waste (WEEE/ e-waste) and work toward mutual sustainability targets.
