On top of that, AI capabilities are embedded directly inside your SAP applications, helping your teams work smarter without ever leaving the tools they already use every day.

Joule Agents are purpose-built AI agents that automate well-defined, multi-step enterprise workflows across your organisation. They are accessed through Joule Assistants— an orchestration layer that uses deep role and process context to coordinate agents and execute complex work autonomously, like smart teammates. There is no separate charge for Joule Assistants; pricing is based entirely on the underlying agents they run.

SAP's business AI commercial model is organised around three layers, each suited to a different stage of adoption and a different way of creating value.

 

The Autonomous Enterprise does not introduce a new commercial or licensing model. Existing SAP SaaS licensing remains unchanged. The AI execution layer that enables autonomy is commercialised using SAP AI Units.

 

There is no separate licence or new commercial construct specific to the Autonomous Enterprise. Customers who already have AI Units simply use them as agents execute work on their behalf—drawing from the same shared pool they use today.

Base AI provides the foundational AI capabilities that come with every SAP cloud subscription at no additional cost. It is available to every user across your organisation from day one, with no AI Units required and no separate activation of a paid plan.

 

Today, most generative AI capabilities are classified as Premium AI and require AI Units. Later this year, the majority of these capabilities are planned to move into Base AI— significantly expanding the AI value included in your standard SAP cloud subscriptions.

 

Capabilities that are already activated and in use will continue to work without interruption. Customers will be guided through a simple terms acceptance process as part of this transition.

Premium AI is where AI moves beyond everyday assistance to executing real business work. It is centred on AI agents—autonomous systems that run processes, trigger workflows and carry out complex tasks on behalf of your organisation. It also includes high-value AI services and SAP Joule for Consultants, the only remaining per-user offering.

For organisations that want to go beyond packaged AI and build solutions tailored to their specific needs, SAP provides a complete platform for developing and running customised agents, applications and workflows.

 

Running custom-built agents in a productive Joule Studio runtime environment is free of charge through the end of 2026—giving your teams time to build, test and deploy without immediate commercial impact.

AI Units are SAP's virtual currency for AI—the single way to access and run Premium AI capabilities across SAP solutions. You purchase AI Units annually through SKU 8019164. They sit in one shared pool and can be used flexibly across all Premium AI capabilities.

AI Units are consumed only when Premium AI actively runs and performs work—agents executing tasks, documents being indexed or other capabilities processing requests.

SAP Joule for Consultants is the one exception: it uses a fixed AI Unit allocation per user per month, rather than measuring each individual action. Unused AI Units expire after 12 months. Base AI capabilities do not consume AI Units.

Agents are the primary focus of Premium AI. When an agent executes a task on behalf of your business, it consumes AI Units based on the number of actions it performs.

 

All SAP-delivered autonomous enterprise agents in 2026 follow a single, consistent price: 0.02 AI Units per agent action

 

An agent action is a single step executed by an AI agent as it completes a task—for example, calling a service, triggering a workflow or generating a response. A task may require multiple actions depending on complexity. Simple interactions involve only a few; complex end-to-end automations may involve many more. Pricing by action means costs are transparent and directly tied to the work AI performs. When an agent is not running, no AI Units are consumed.

SAP Joule for Consultants is SAP's per-user, per-month premium offering, designed for professional services scenarios where AI value is directly tied to individual productivity. Each assigned user is charged 35 AI Units per month, which includes a pooled fair-use request allowance of 22,900 requests per user per month. The number of assigned users can be adjusted monthly as needs change.

 

For Joule for Consultants, each assigned user includes a defined number of requests per month. These requests are pooled across all users within the package — meaning unused capacity from one user offsets higher usage by another.

 

If the total pooled request allowance is exceeded across all users in a month, the additional requests are converted to AI Units and billed at month-end at 2 AI Units per 1,000 requests.

SAP is evolving its AI commercial model to better align pricing with actual AI consumption and delivered value, while preserving core commercial constructs that ensure consistency and predictability.

 

As SAP's AI capabilities mature—particularly with the increased use of agentic AI—traditional user-based pricing becomes less representative of actual value creation.

 

With the evolved commercial model, Premium AI is refocused on AI agents. In agent-based scenarios, value is generated through actions carried out on behalf of the business: executing tasks, automating processes or making operational decisions, rather than simply supporting individual users.

AI value is no longer primarily tied to the number of users because business AI has shifted from supporting people to executing work. Today, AI increasingly works through agents that run processes, trigger workflows and act autonomously across the business.

 

In this model, a single agent can perform a large amount of work without direct human involvement. That means value no longer scales with access, but with how much work the AI actually performs. The more tasks an agent executes, the more value it creates. Because of this, AI usage is measured through agent actions—which represent the concrete work an agent carries out. Actions provide a direct link to execution, usage and business impact, making pricing more transparent and aligned with how AI delivers value in practice.

Later this year, most generative AI features currently requiring AI Units will move into Base AI at no additional cost. Capabilities that are already activated and in use will continue to work without interruption. As part of this transition, customers will be asked to accept updated Base AI terms through a straightforward process.

 

Your SAP account team is available to guide you through any transition.

SAP for Me gives you near real-time visibility into your AI Unit consumption. If you are approaching or have exceeded your purchased AI Units, you can proactively deactivate agents or features directly in SAP for Me to prevent further consumption.

 

Should you choose to keep services running beyond your purchased volume, additional usage is billed under excess-use (pay-per-use) terms at the applicable AI Unit rate.

SAP for Me gives you near real-time visibility into your AI Unit consumption. SAP for Me is your central hub for activating AI capabilities and monitoring AI Unit consumption, balances and billing.

The per-user-per-month packages—such as Joule Premium for Finance, Human Capital Management, Supply Chain, Spend Management and Customer Experience—are being retired retired later this year as the features they include move into Base AI.

 

SAP Joule for Consultants is the only per-user offering that will remain in Premium AI.
