For enterprises runningSAP Business Technology Platform, includingSAP Build solutions and SAP Integration Suite, there are other major benefits too. Seamlessintegration is possible with SAP and non-SAPsolutions, thanks to pre-built connectors. Thesemay be standalone applications or extensions toyour enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, such as SAP S/4HANA, or line of business systems– such as SAP Ariba solutions for procurement,SAP SuccessFactors solutions for human resourcemanagement - and so on.At SAP, we’ve learned where common pitfallsexist from our own experience with fusiondevelopment using low-code and pro-code. Inthis guide, we explore these critical momentsalong the project development lifecycle andshare lessons learned on how to overcome them.IntroductionHow to manage the project lifecycle from end to endIn the next sections, this guide follows the phases of the development project lifecycle, portrayed here. Inreality, this process is cyclical and follows an agile development cycle. However, we’ve portrayed it hereas a funnel for the sake of simplicity. Also, the concept we are presenting here is a blueprint and should be customized appropriately for thedigital maturity and size of your organization. For example, smaller companies don’t need dozens ofapproval steps. But multinationals, publicly-listed enterprises, and regulated industries may require amore robust development lifecycle process and conditions for passing stage-gates.Ideation LoB Validation IT PO Validation Design DevelopmentPreparationDevelopment TestingSecurity ComplianceRollout Operation SupportUse CaseSubmissionLoBApprovalIT POApprovalPOCAcceptanceDevelopmentApprovalUserAcceptanceGo-Live SunsetEnablement
4 | 26Governing a fusion development program and SAP Build center of excellenceDuring the enablement phase, your buildersshould receive training to use the technologyeffectively. This phase sets the groundwork forleveraging the new functionalities efficiently –ensuring that builders have a strongunderstanding of how to design, build, test, anddeploy their solution. Informative documentationand hands-on training sessions play a crucial role.Builders may see the big potential of fusiondevelopment right away. But jumping in too fastwithout proper guidance or structure can bringproblems – it’s important to ensure that allbuilders have a minimum required skillset beforecreating productive solutions. The challenges with enablementWithout sufficient training, there’s a risk that keyusers create poorly-designed automations orapplications, leading to problems with security, data access, and process logic.Poor design can lead to higher maintenance costsin the future. Applications may also need to beredeveloped or fixed by developers, increasingcost. Moreover, applications may be developedthat do not integrate well with existing systems, leading to interoperability issues. This processaffects not only compliance and efficiency, butalso the motivation of your fusion developmentteam – as repeated failure will discourage them.Balancing the long-term technical enablementwithout exhausting and undermining the businessteam’s enthusiasm can be challenging. Similarly, motivating employees to transition to a newparadigm and environment can also be difficult.Important questions you need to ask What does your workforce look like? What aretheir skill sets? How do you start working with key users anddevelopers? How do you set up a fusion team? What is the strategy for onboarding new users tothe platform? How do you manage the learning curve for userswho are new to fusion development? How will you ensure that all users have anadequate understanding of the platform’scapabilities and limitations? What is the plan for continuous learning andupskilling as the platform evolves? Does your team have the skills and expertise touse the fusion development platform? If not,how will we address this gap? What is the fusion development platform? 5 | 26Governing a fusion development program and SAP Build center of excellenceLessons learned to improve enablementIt’s important for fusion development to keepcitizen developers excited by not appearing toocomplex. Otherwise, nontechnical users willsimply give up before they’ve started. However, fusion development tools require dedicatedlearning resources and exams. The followingapproach can help: If you want excellent results, then the trainingshould be first-class too. If your builders are notempowered to solve problems on their own, they will call the IT department constantly forhelp. This will create pressure on IT teams andhinder the fusion development approach. Key users need to be prepared for the differentsteps in building their automations anddevelopments, the lifecycle process. Makethem aware of the objectives, requirements, andrules of each phase. Key users don’t need to understand everythingat once. One way to help would be to provide abasic certification similar to a driver’s license –and then add some gamification or achievementawards as they grow in expertise andexperience. In turn, this would unlock higherlevels of opportunity and responsibility. Don’t start before you’re ready! Ensure yoursystems, testing environments, and training areready before showing tools to your builders.Seamless integration is key. Your tools must talkto each other or collaboration is difficult. Whileit’s great to excite and motivate teams, adelayed start may lead to them losing interest. Playing around in the sandbox is good for awhile, but it shouldn’t be more than a fewmonths before you give your new buildersfull access to the development andtest environment. Create a community of practice for your keyusers and connect them with each other – andas a group. Give them access to all theresources they need, keep them updated, offerstructured learning opportunities, and presentinformation and rules in a way that suits yourplans and environment. This way, they will allhave a baseline level of knowledge and cansupport each other. Establish a community platform to oversee andguide your builders collectively. This platformwill furnish them with essential information, tutorials, and guidance that’s especially curatedfor their needs. It will also foster interactionsamong the community members and provide astructured learning experience. Choose a person or team to further nurture, manage, maintain, and grow this community. Usedifferent types of enablement. Key users willcome from a broad range of backgrounds. Theywill need different learning assets and trainingto really understand fusion development.Deliverables of theenablement phaseThe stage gate at the end of this phaseis use case submission. At this point:You’ll have established learningrequirements, assets, and a digitalcenter of excellence for communitybuilding and communicationsYour builders will understandgeneral product capabilities andlimitations – and can start ideationfor new solutionsYour builders can understand thespecific organizational requirementsand how to ensure enterprisesecurity and compliance
