In return, future development of solarinnovations have become limited due to complexinterfaces, low performance, and expiringmaintenance intervals of solutions installed on-site.The aging system posed a major challenge to thecompetitive delivery of the latest solar technologyinnovations in a new SMA Gigawatt Factory. Risksincluded production downtime resulting in frustratedemployees, high logistics costs, unsatisfactoryinventory management, and a lack of processtransparency.SMA initiated the modernization of its operationsby establishing a cloud foundation that includesSAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition integrated withthe SAP Digital Manufacturing solution and variousother SAP and third-party solutions. Guided by theexpertise of the Cloud Success Services team fromSAP, this transition was supported by a selectivedata migration, strategic prioritization of processimprovements, and a focus on standardization.SMA continues to enhance its digital capabilities onthe integrated platform. Plans include tools forcollaboration, transportation management, yardlogistics, and integrated business planning. The project is already delivering impressive results, boosting supply chain productivity, reducinginventory carrying costs, and decreasing days ininventory. This trend is expected to continue assupply-chain planning costs and total logistics costsdecrease. The initiative will also help streamlinetransportation planning, curb freight spending, andestablish a collaborative partner portal. Additionally, the real-time visibility that the platform provides canhelp improve transparency into order statuses whilesupporting connected devices in the yard. Overall, these outcomes signify an enhancement inoperational efficiency across various facets of theorganization.

GLOBAL CHALLENGES BUSINESS CHALLENGESChallenges and Objectives 1 of 2© 2024 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved | PUBLIC 6 More people, companies, and institutions around the world arefocused on making themselves increasingly independent fromenergy-based fossil fuels. Decentralized solar power is currently the most cost-effectiveoption for energy generation, compared to wind, gas, and coal. Storage systems and digital solutions must balance out energygeneration and consumption so B2B and B2C customers canshare their electricity with other consumers. Global cumulative solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity has growncontinuously since 2000, rising to 1,177 GW in 2022 with roughly239 GW of new PV capacity installed that same year. The introduction of wind and solar energy generation into thepower grid increases decentralization, making the electricitysupply system more complex. Players in the power-generation sector must be smoothlyintegrated and interconnected to provide a sustainable, secure, and cost-effective electricity supply. A comprehensive understanding of the backbone of futureenergy supply is necessary to integrate renewable energies andstorage systems smoothly and secure reliable power. A more flexible architecture was needed to support the PEARLprogram, which is transforming the company from a hardwaremanufacturer to a customer-oriented solution provider.
