At DMG MORI AG, every production minute counts - and every missing component can bring high-value
manufacturing to a standstill. The journey began by digitalizing the entire internal material flow, bringing
forklifts and tugger trains onto a single, transparent platform. But the real ambition went further - preparing
the factory for a future where humans and autonomous mobile robots move side by side, carrying
oversized materials through shared routes. This required more than connectivity - it demanded
orchestration.
Today, transport demands originate in SAP Extended Warehouse Management, but the story comes to life
on the shop floor: FlexGuide4 runs on the SAP Business Technology Platform and acts as the conductor
of this hybrid logistics ecosystem, translating demand into perfectly timed movements. Each transport or-
der is dynamically assigned, each route intelligently coordinated, each resource - manual or autonomous -
woven into one living flow. What once was fragmented execution is becoming a synchronized system, turn-
ing intralogistics from a hidden constraint into a strategic advantage and laying the groundwork for a resili-
ent, autonomous, and data-driven supply chain.

The project was driven by growing complexity in DMG MORI
AG’s internal logistics. Increasing product variants, oversized
materials, and tighter production cycles pushed traditional
transport processes to their limits. Forklifts and tugger trains
operated in parallel, but without centralized orchestration,
leading to manual coordination, limited transparency, and
inefficient routing. At the same time, DMG MORI AG aimed to
introduce its own autonomous mobile robots—making hybrid
traffic management a critical requirement. The organization
needed a unified, SAP-integrated control layer to synchronize
humans and robots, ensure reliable material supply, and cre-
ate a scalable foundation for future automation.
The solution is built on SAP Extended Warehouse Manage-
ment (EWM) and the SAP Business Technology Platform, with
FlexGuide4 running onSAP BTP as the central orchestration
layer for transport execution. Transport orders are created in
SAP EWM or manually in FlexGuide4 and dynamically dis-
patched by FlexGuide4 to forklifts, tugger trains, and future
mobile robots. The team’s primary contribution focused on es-
tablishing the technical and operational foundation: setting up
the integration infrastructure, connecting vehicles, and en-
abling reliable end-to-end processes. Equally important was
preparing the organization—training operators and logistics
staff to work with digital transport processes. This pragmatic,
people-centered approach ensured fast adoption, stable opera-
tions, and a scalable platform for future automation.
The project has transformed internal logistics from fragmented
execution into a synchronized, SAP-driven material flow. Today,
all material processes are managed through SAP EWM, with
real-time data synchronization between shop-floor operations
and SAP ensuring full transparency and reliable execution.
Transport orders are dynamically orchestrated, reducing
manual coordination and improving responsiveness to produc-
tion demands. The standardized architecture provides a
scalable blueprint that can be rolled out to additional plants.
Most importantly, the factory is now future-ready: a digital
foundation is in place to seamlessly integrate DMG MORI AG’s
mobile robots, enabling the next step toward autonomous, data-
driven intralogistics

routing constraints. Transport assignment traditionally relied on manual
coordination and operator experience - especially when wide loads required
careful traffic management.
Using SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) and the SAP Busi-
ness Technology Platform, the team implemented FlexGuide4 as a digital
orchestration layer. Transport orders are automatically created in SAP and
intelligently assigned based on load characteristics, vehicle capabilities, and
priority rules.
The next evolution is hybrid traffic management. While forklifts are digitally
orchestrated today, the architecture is designed to integrate DMG MORI
AG’s autonomous mobile robots as a natural extension. Forklifts and robots
will operate under one centralized control system, coordinating wide loads
and shared routes in real time. Rather than isolated automation islands, ro-
bots become fully integrated resources - enabling DMG MORI AG to trans-
ition from optimized manual logistics to a scalable, hybrid, and future-ready
material flow.

WHY SAP
The project is built on a cloud-native SAP architecture that connects enter-
prise planning directly with shop-floor execution. SAP Extended Warehouse
Management (EWM) creates transport demands, while FlexGuide4 runs as a
CAP application on the SAP Business Technology Platform, orchestrating all
transport orders in real time. Powered by SAP HANA Cloud and deployed on
SAP Cloud Foundry Runtime, the solution delivers low-latency processing
and scalable operations. SAP Cloud Identity Services ensure secure access,
and SAP Application Logging Service provides transparency and operational
stability.
Together, these technologies enable real-time synchronization between SAP
and operations, standardized material processes, and a reusable blueprint for
multi-site rollout. The impact goes beyond efficiency: the architecture
establishes a future-ready foundation for hybrid traffic management and
autonomous mobile robots, transforming SAP into an active execution layer
and accelerating the shift toward intelligent, data-driven intralogistics across
industrial manufacturing.
SAP as the solution provider was chosen to have a seamless integration
between the EWM backend and the web-based frontend accessing the BTP
(Cloud) environment. SAP is in place at DMG MORI AG since 2020, includ-
ing a holistic and integrated approach for Shopfloor operations, including
Extended Warehouse Management, now enhanced by state-of-the-art
Cloudbased and Cloud Identity Services -secured BTP component of
FLEXUS.

of one or various transport HUs at the physical source bin. This is saving
a lot of operating time for assignment to forklift truck / tugger train.

to forget the posting or physical delivery of a HU. System gives high
transparency through permanent adjustment between physical and sys-
tem wise transport orders.”

approach was to first implement an SAP-integrated transport guidance

the foundation for the quick ramp-up of the number of DMG MORI AG
AMRs used alongside manual industrial trucks in our entire
intralogistics.”
