Each transport or-der is dynamically assigned, each route intelligently coordinated, each resource - manual or autonomous -woven into one living flow. Increasing product variants, oversizedmaterials, and tighter production cycles pushed traditionaltransport processes to their limits. Forklifts and tugger trainsoperated in parallel, but without centralized orchestration,leading to manual coordination, limited transparency, andinefficient routing. At the same time, DMG MORI AG aimed tointroduce its own autonomous mobile robots—making hybridtraffic management a critical requirement. The organizationneeded a unified, SAP-integrated control layer to synchronizehumans and robots, ensure reliable material supply, and cre-ate a scalable foundation for future automation.The solution is built on SAP Extended Warehouse Manage-ment (EWM) and the SAP Business Technology Platform, withFlexGuide4 running onSAP BTP as the central orchestrationlayer for transport execution. Transport orders are created inSAP EWM or manually in FlexGuide4 and dynamically dis-patched by FlexGuide4 to forklifts, tugger trains, and futuremobile robots. The team’s primary contribution focused on es-tablishing the technical and operational foundation: setting upthe integration infrastructure, connecting vehicles, and en-abling reliable end-to-end processes. Equally important waspreparing the organization—training operators and logisticsstaff to work with digital transport processes. This pragmatic,people-centered approach ensured fast adoption, stable opera-tions, and a scalable platform for future automation.The project has transformed internal logistics from fragmentedexecution into a synchronized, SAP-driven material flow. Transport assignment traditionally relied on manualcoordination and operator experience - especially when wide loads requiredcareful traffic management.Using SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) and the SAP Busi-ness Technology Platform, the team implemented FlexGuide4 as a digitalorchestration layer. Transport orders are automatically created in SAP andintelligently assigned based on load characteristics, vehicle capabilities, andpriority rules.The next evolution is hybrid traffic management. While forklifts are digitallyorchestrated today, the architecture is designed to integrate DMG MORIAG’s autonomous mobile robots as a natural extension. Forklifts and robotswill operate under one centralized control system, coordinating wide loadsand shared routes in real time. SAP Extended WarehouseManagement (EWM) creates transport demands, while FlexGuide4 runs as aCAP application on the SAP Business Technology Platform, orchestrating alltransport orders in real time. Powered by SAP HANA Cloud and deployed onSAP Cloud Foundry Runtime, the solution delivers low-latency processingand scalable operations. SAP Cloud Identity Services ensure secure access,and SAP Application Logging Service provides transparency and operationalstability.Together, these technologies enable real-time synchronization between SAPand operations, standardized material processes, and a reusable blueprint formulti-site rollout. The impact goes beyond efficiency: the architectureestablishes a future-ready foundation for hybrid traffic management andautonomous mobile robots, transforming SAP into an active execution layerand accelerating the shift toward intelligent, data-driven intralogistics acrossindustrial manufacturing.SAP as the solution provider was chosen to have a seamless integrationbetween the EWM backend and the web-based frontend accessing the BTP(Cloud) environment.
