Consolidating business areas and improving data quality and consistency

Reliable, high-quality water is critical to life, supporting everything from energy generation to food production, healthcare, and a healthy home. Evoqua Water Technologies is a leading provider of water and wastewater treatment solutions that do just that for industrial, municipal, and recreational customers.

Following a carve-out from a major holding company, Evoqua looked to integrate and consolidate operations, which required standardizing core business areas on a common ERP platform. It also wanted to standardize the way data was being collected and managed, starting with customer and vendor master data.

Evoqua needed a solution to improve the quality and consistency of information across its enterprise that would also allow it to centrally govern that information across the master data lifecycle.

With SAP Master Data Governance, we have a more consistent view of customer and supplier information as well as a foundation for moving to SAP S/4HANA.

Starting with master data to ease the migration to SAP S/4HANA

As Evoqua Water Technologies looked to unify its SAP ERP application landscape by moving to SAP S/4HANA, it decided to start with master data. It chose the SAP Master Data Governance application because it allows the management of customer, vendor, materials, and product master data in a single solution – breaking down data and business silos. Another key factor was the ability to integrate with its existing SAP software landscape, thus easing the migration to SAP S/4HANA.

Evoqua also got data governance guidance from SAP and migration support using the SAP Data Migration application by Syniti.

Beginning with customer and vendor master data, Evoqua’s IT team worked closely with SAP and business users to establish a master data governance workflow model by first understanding the various roles and processes, then defining fields, requesters, access, approvers, and so on.

Improving master data management and control today and for the future

As a company that has experienced significant growth in the past few years, Evoqua has found the SAP Master Data Governance application to be a key tool in supporting its future.

Customer data is more accurate and consistent – providing greater insight into vertical markets. Simpler vendor payment terms enable greater visibility into requests, trends, suppliers, and payments – helping guide a more advantageous buying strategy. And better tax-ID data collection helps streamline invoicing.

Having one common application means data needs to be entered and updated only once. This also provides complete data visibility. Plus, Evoqua can track and govern who creates and approves new data and how it is entered, enabling a consistent master data structure and reporting across current and future business systems.

Finally, for the company at large, employees are gaining a greater understanding of the importance and impact of master data management and control.
