As one of the largest manufacturers of two-wheelers in India, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) Pvt. Ltd. needed a better way to produce management reports. As a long-term SAP customer, HMSI decided to use SAP Datasphere and other SAP solutions to consolidate companywide data into a powerful management dashboard for near-real-time reporting.

Before working with SAP to solve our reporting issues, it was difficult to compile the company’s expansive data into a unified database as it was siloed in different systems throughout various operations. Reliable reporting was equally challenging because we did not have a single, unified view of our business operations.

Creating an innovative, efficient solution for data collection and reporting

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) is the wholly owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, Japan – the world’s leading two-wheeler company. Commencing its Indian two-wheeler operations in May 2001, Honda has grown to become India’s second-largest two-wheeler company in the last two decades with over 60 million happy customers.

As a future-ready organization, HMSI has been at the forefront of innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, consistently delivering a vast lineup of world-class products tailored to meet the diverse needs of its customers. The company has won more than 200 prestigious awards for manufacturing and product excellence.

The company recently transformed its operations in Manesar and consolidated its corporate functions to achieve greater efficiencies within the company’s verticals and across all teams. Productivity has improved enterprise-wide, and various new digital initiatives for daily operations are enhancing the work-life balance of the company’s employees.

One of HMSI’s digital initiatives was to find a better way to provide its management team with insights and intelligence for better decision-making. Within its manufacturing and retail operations, there was a large volume of enterprise-wide data that resided in various disparate sources. This made it difficult to manage and integrate the siloed data, and reporting had to be manually executed in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and then summarized for management in Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. These processes were very time-consuming and error prone and, therefore, difficult to credibly rely on.

HMSI wanted to find a more efficient way to collect and analyze the data from each area of the company’s operations in a way that provided a high-level single source of truth. HMSI also wanted to create a digital cockpit to present the data to executive management so they could see in near-real time how the company was performing against its business-critical key performance indicators (KPIs).

As part of our digital transformation, we now have our own datasphere platform that integrates our enterprise-wide data so there is a single source of truth available. We can create intelligent, insightful dashboards for our top management so they can view all aspects of the business and our critical KPIs in near-real time.

Providing near-real-time visibility into business KPIs

To transform its management reporting, HMSI choose to implement the SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud solutions and SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

The company now uses SAP Datasphere to harmonize data management, drive insightful analytics, and assist with intelligent planning. With SAP Analytics Cloud on SAP BTP, the company built the digital cockpit it envisioned with a reporting dashboard that could be customized and tailored to the needs of the people on the management team. Like a pilot’s cockpit, HMSI’s cockpit gives users insights into how the company is performing, the direction it is headed, and how key objectives are being achieved.

Through a visualization layer in SAP Analytics Cloud, HMSI can now provide decision-makers with near-real-time insights into its operations and related KPIs. The data driving the insights is consolidated data from the company’s solutions for ERP and HR from SAP, as well as other production, inventory, dispatching, customer experience, and sales systems.

Additionally, the company is taking advantage of SAP BTP’s planning capabilities to do model costing in its purchasing operations.

All our critical KPIs – like production, dispatches, retail sales, factory inventory, and customer service – are available to our management team right on their mobile devices, so they can get the critical data they need, right when they need it.

Achieving greater future-ready results with smarter management insights

HMSI’s new datasphere is a key part of its digital transformation, and now, with its digital cockpit, the company has deep visibility into the performance of the company against its KPIs. In addition to enterprise-wide access to the operational efficiency of its data across functions, the company can better manage inventory for its factories, which is creating greater efficiencies while saving time and money.

Managers have enhanced control over their departments and can make decisions in the moment based on near-real-time analytics. Customer service has also improved as the result of insights that were not previously available.

HMSI has just begun tapping into the full capabilities of SAP BTP, but it is already seeing successes in its purchasing department through the model costing, which is helping the company more efficiently forecast the costs of its manufacturing processes.

We are very happy with the success we have achieved so far with SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud, and SAP BTP. This was a great step forward in our digital transformation, and we look forward to continuing this success with greater data intelligence and by creating a data digital boardroom for better data-driven decision-making.

Preparing for continued success with further adoption of SAP solutions

HMSI plans on extending its datasphere capabilities to include more data intelligence with real-time data and a data digital boardroom, both of which will help improve decision-making for management.

With its recent success launching model costing in purchasing with SAP BTP, the company wants to start using the planning component of the platform for its entire budgeting process. In addition, HMSI intends to begin using AI for application development as well as to improve focused forecasting.
