The SAP HANA Hardware Directory lists all hardware that has been certified or is supported under the following scenarios:

  • Hardware that has been certified within the SAP HANA hardware certification program
  • Previously validated hardware based on Westmere technology - as reflected earlier in the Product Availability Matrix – PAM.
  • Supported Intel® Systems: Only single node systems with minimum 8 cores per supported Intel architecture and valid for particular SAP HANA SPS releases

The certification is valid for a particular group of appliances/storage family of the hardware manufacturer wherein multiple models might be included. For further details, like released CPU types, please compare the scenario pages in SCN:

Details in the listings are as provided by the Partner on the certification/publishing date. They are subject to change and may be changed by SAP at any time without notice. It is not intended to be binding upon SAP to any particular course of business, product strategy and/or development.

The certification is valid for the stipulated time-period. Any errors in a listing do not result in the right to get support for a particular configuration.

The Supported Intel® Systems are valid for specific service packs. The hardware was tested by the hardware partner with SAP LinuxLab. The systems are supported for SAP HANA.

For SAP HANA compute nodes memory chips have to be homogeneous, spread across all CPUs symmetrically and providing maximum bandwidth.

The certification is valid for the period stipulated in the Integration Certification Agreement.  The exact validity date of the certification is indicated in the certification letter that is issued upon successful completion of testing.

The certification confirms the existence of product features in accordance with SAP certification procedures. SAP only certifies successful integration of the product with SAP solutions. Vendor is responsible for the product itself and its error-free operation.

The hardware is required to have a valid SAP HANA Hardware certification at the point of purchase by the customer. Once the validity date of the certification has passed, the hardware will continue to be supported by the Partner until the end of maintenance as indicated by the Partner. 

Certified Appliances

The certification is valid for a particular group of appliances from the hardware manufacturer wherein multiple models might be included. During the preparation phase of the certification Partner and SAP can jointly agree on the group of appliances. The group of appliances can be defined as a set of appliance models that share and fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • They are based on the same architecture
  • Within one group of certified appliances different CPU models within the same microarchitecture can be used as released by SAP HANA reference architecture:
    • Nehalem EX architecture:
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) X7560
    • Westmere EX architecture:
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7- 2870
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7- 4870
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7- 8870
    • Ivy Bridge EX architecture:
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7-2880 v2
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7-2890 v2
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7-4880 v2
      • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7-4890 v2

  • Empty CPU slots may be filled up to the maximum number supported by the appliance
  • Memory chips have to be homogeneous, spread across all CPUs symmetrically providing maximum bandwidth
    • For Intel Skylake SP architecture additional DIMM populations are possible. Please contact your hardware partner for details.
  • They have the same disk layout
  • They use the same storage connector(s) and/or RAID controller as described in the documentation
  • Comparable components are used as with the tested setup
  • All the KPIs are met by the lowest member of the group of appliances
  • Consistent documentation for the group of appliances which is applicable for all SAP HANA setup scenarios: single node, scale up and scale out
    • Scale-up: BWoH/BW4H/DM/SoH/S4H includes hardware approved for all single server configuration scenarios for SAP BW powered by SAP HANASAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, S/4HANA and more
    • Scale-up: SoH/S4H includes additional single server configurations specific for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA and S/4HANA not covered by Scale-up: BWoH/BW4H/DM/SoH/S4H
    • Scale-out: BWoH/BW4H/DM includes multi-server configuration scenario for SAP BW powered by SAP HANA
    • Scale-out: S4H includes multi-server configurations scenario for S/4HANA (see SAP note 2408419 - SAP S/4HANA - Multi-Node Support)
    • SAP Business One includes single server configurations specific for SAP Business One
      • For upgrades of SAP Business One, SAP HANA and operating system please see SAP Note 2592452
      • Additional CPUs for SAP Business One:
        • Haswell EP architecture: Intel E5-2670 v3
        • Broadwell EP architecture: Intel E5-2650 v4 or E5-26## v4
          with higher specification;
          System size <= 256 GB is supported with E5-2630 v4
        • Skylake SP architecture: Intel SP-5118 or SP CPU
          with higher specification;
          System size <= 384 GB is supported with Intel SP-4114

SAP HANA 2.0

For SAP HANA Platform 2.0 SPS 00 on Intel-based hardware platforms the minimum operating system versions are:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux for SAP Applications (RHEL for SAP Applications) 7.2
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP Applications 12 SP1

For SAP HANA Platform 2.0 SPS 00 on Intel-based hardware platforms the minimum generation has to be Intel® Haswell CPU or later.

HANA on virtualized environment

For operation of SAP HANA on virtualized environment the combination of Hardware and Hypervisor needs to be supported.

Appliance Certification Scenarios

There are several scenarios available for HANA Hardware Appliance certification. Please see details below for the test procedure which comes with each scenario version applicable to the HANA Hardware Certification Check Tool (HWCCT). Certifications that were released under scenario 1.0 remain valid until their expiration date and to be used with all SAP HANA revisions.

  1. Scenario Version 1.0
    • Appliance for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES): HANA-HWC-AP SU 1.0
    • Appliance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): HANA-HWC-AP RH 1.0
    • For certification tests, HWCCT based on HANA SPS8 or SPS9 and related revisions is used.
  2. Scenario Version 1.1
    • Appliance for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES): HANA-HWC-AP SU 1.1
    • Appliance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): HANA-HWC-AP RH 1.1
    • For certification tests, HWCCT based on HANA SPS10 and related revisions is used.
  3. Legacy appliances released prior to 2014
    • HWCCT cannot be used for validating storage performance, see SAP Note 2187426.
    • HWCCT can only be used to validate operating system configuration settings and network performance.

Certified Enterprise Storage

The certification is valid for a particular enterprise storage family of the hardware manufacturer wherein multiple models might be included. During the preparation phase of the certification, the Partner and SAP can jointly agree on the group of appliances to be certified. The storage family can be defined as a set of enterprise storage models that share and fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • They are based on the same architecture
  • They use the same storage connector(s)
  • Comparable components are used as with the tested setup
  • All the KPIs are met by the lowest member of the storage family
  • Consistent documentation for the storage family which is applicable for all SAP HANA setup scenarios: single node, scale up and scale out

Enterprise Storage Certification Scenarios

There are several scenarios available for SAP HANA enterprise storage certification. Please see details below for the test procedure which comes with each scenario version applicable to the HANA Hardware Certification Check Tool (HWCCT).

  1. Scenario Version HANA-HWC-ES 1.0
    • ​​For certification tests,  HWCCT based on HANA SPS8 or SPS9 and related revisions is used.
  2. Scenario Version HANA-HWC-ES 1.1
    • ​​For certification tests, HWCCT based on HANA SPS10 and related revisions is used.
    • New KPI table is introduce

The Enterprise Storage Certification Scenario HANA-HWC-ES 1.1 is the successor of HANA-HWC-ES 1.0 with an updated testing method and an adopted set of KPIs. Certifications that were released under scenario 1.0 remain valid until their expiration date and to be used with all SAP HANA revisions. From July 14th 2015 onwards the certification scenario 1.1 is mandatory.

Certified IaaS Platforms

Certification is valid as of its publication date. Currently, certification is limited for a time-period of 3 years. This is regarded as long enough compared to the lifecycle of Cloud platforms (typically short). The time limit describes the sales cycle, not the support cycle and applies to new customer installations on respective platforms. If customers are running on once certified Cloud platforms and do not want to switch platforms they can do so without termination of the support statement. Please be aware that a comparable statement of SAP software is not being made here.
The certification is valid for a specific, typically named platform type which is defined by its certified qualifications with regards to

  • CPU type
  • network technologies
  • memory technologies
  • storage or file systems
  • operation system
  • virtualization technologies, including software and hardware virtualization

Supported Intel® Systems

These systems are supported solutions approved for use with SAP HANA scenarios
within SAP HANA Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI overview / TDI FAQ).
Intel® systems have the following criteria:

  • 2 sockets systems (2 or 4 sockets for Broadwell E7 and Skylake based systems) equipped with even number of CPUs
  • CPUs with a minimum of 8 cores each (applies to all mentioned CPU types and generations)
  • Memory chips have to be homogeneous, spread across all CPUs symmetrically providing maximum bandwidth
    • From Skylake CPU generation additional DIMM populations are possible
  • SAP HANA scale-out support with Intel Skylake Platinum top-bin CPUs
    • Minimum 4 socket systems for OLAP workload
    • Minimum 8 socket systems for OLTP workload
  • Valid for specific Support Package Stack (SPS) releases
  • Intel Xeon E5 v2/v3/v4 based systems (2-socket systems only)
  • Intel Xeon E7 v4 based systems (minimum of 2 socket systems)
  • Intel Xeon Platinum/Gold/Silver (Skylake) (minimum of 2 socket systems)
