By evolvingthe previous 3-tier model, this new maturitymodel categorizes extensions into four distinctlevels (A, B, C, and D) based on their architecturalintegrity, upgrade safety, and alignment with cleancore principles.This approach allows for a more granularassessment of an extension’s quality andupgrade stability, moving beyond a simplebinary “clean” vs. “unclean” classification.The core recommendation remains a “SAPBTP first” strategy, aiming for the highestlevel, but the new model also acknowledgesthe realities of complex system landscapesand supports customers to tailor their cleancore journeys. How it works: The four clean core levelsexplainedEach extension is evaluated using a standardizedmethodology based on how it is built, how well itis decoupled from the core, and how easily it canbe upgraded or maintained: Level A: Extend with SAP Build—Fully com-pliant extensions using only publicly releasedand stable interfaces backed by formal stabilitycontracts. Side-by-side: Built on SAP BTP using pro-code and low-code tools for app develop-ment and process automation. On-stack: Built within SAP Cloud ERP Privateusing the ABAP Cloud development modelwith publicly released APIs. Level B: Leverage classic APIs—use SAP’sclassic APIs and technologies with well-defined,documented, and generally upgrade-stableinterfaces. Level C: Access internal objects—Partiallycompliant extensions that rely on SAP internalobjects, offering flexibility for legacy scenarios.To reduce upgrade risk, SAP provides the chan-gelog for SAP objects to help identify incompat-ible changes early and plan upgradesproactively. Level D: Not recommended extensions—Extensions not considered “clean” that useexplicitly non-recommended objects or tech-niques (e.g., objects marked as “noAPI” in theCloudification Repository, modifications to SAPobjects, direct write access to SAP tables, orimplicit enhancements). Instead,it provides a more practical and transparentframework to achieve it.It empowers organizations to make informeddecisions, understand the specific risks associ-ated with their custom code, and strategicallyplan their modernization efforts.
