Global E-Commerce Simplified with Worldpay from FIS on SAP Store
By Rajiv Nema, Marketplace Team, SAP Digital Experiences | January 10, 2023
Did you ever wonder how it’s possible for you to make an online purchase with a single click on your phone – while your colleague who lives halfway around the world can do exactly the same thing? Ever wonder how retailers can do business online globally, regardless of different countries’ currencies, tax laws, banking regulations, and reporting requirements, not to mention countless payment methods? The answer: it’s complicated. But I learned a great deal about how these processes are simplified for retailers with Worldpay Extension for SAP Commerce Cloud, a star solution on SAP Store, by talking with Rob Lyons, head of partner solutions at Worldpay from FIS.
Worldpay’s payment extension works with the SAP Commerce Cloud solution to support online as well as in-store sales, essentially taking care of all the back-end aspects of the transaction. As a payment processing platform, the Worldpay solution is one of many but there are many distinguishing capabilities making it a leading solution on the market, Rob noted.
A World of Potential
Topping the list is globalization. “Most enterprises – even small and midsize companies – want to be everywhere,” he said, “but every country has its own rules. With our solution, the merchants don’t need to understand them, because we do.” With banking relationships in more than 90% of the world’s countries, he added, Worldpay enables customers to enter multiple new markets all at once, offering multiple global and regional payment methods and single checkout. The company maintains a dedicated team to help smaller retailers who aren’t necessarily savvy on the technical side, making sure the integrations go smoothly and questions are answered quickly. “Anybody can process payments,” Rob observed. “A big part of our job is to put our customers at ease, give them confidence, and help them get more sales.”
Meanwhile, the solution handles complex transactions like chargebacks and serves as a one-stop source for reconciliations, with order data automatically matched against provider reports to detect discrepancies. “That results in huge cost savings for our customers,” Rob remarked.
Solution for a Universal Epidemic: Fraud
And then there’s the curse of every retailer everywhere: credit-card fraud. Worldpay from FIS provides sophisticated authentication and market-leading fraud-detection tools, as well as best-of-breed reporting capabilities, while improving acceptance rates from legitimate shoppers. “Once you sign a contract with us, we take the liability,” Rob said. There is so much fraud out there, and scams are particularly rampant in certain countries, he added. “I’ll be talking to one of our risk managers, who will explain some of the latest stories fabricated to fleece the unwary.”
An Active Participant in the SAP Ecosystem
I was curious to know about Rob’s expertise in the payments area, which is clearly broad and deep, and wasn’t surprised to hear that he’s been in the business for some 30 years. His tenure includes a lengthy stint with the company that built the original platform for payment processing that evolved, through many acquisitions, into Worldpay. He’s been in business management, sales, and technology, and now is in charge of managing partnerships and integrations. That puts him in regular contact with the world’s largest technology partners that leverage the Worldpay platform to support merchants of all sizes. One of those partners is E2Y, an enterprise e-commerce company – and SAP partner – that builds integrations. “When we need something done immediately, we call E2Y,” Rob said. “We have a great three-way relationship with SAP and E2Y.”
As for the partnership with SAP, a long history is involved there, as well; Rob has worked with SAP since the 1990s. In its current incarnation, Worldpay has been an SAP partner for five years, and Rob is now responsible for working with the team that supports the SAP Commerce Cloud portfolio. Since many Worldpay customers are large enterprises, they are already using SAP solutions – the ecosystem in action.
