Michał's story

At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.

One of my greatest achievements at SAP so far is the Team Hack – a summer internship a colleague and I were responsible for. We owned the entire process, from recruitment to organizing trainings, defining the scope and focus topics, and providing ongoing support. All of the students stayed with us after the internship ended.

I joined Hybris as a Software Developer in 2015, before it was acquired by SAP. I have been interested in Agile methodologies since I first heard about them at the university and so not long after I joined the company, I became a Scrum Master. For some time, I combined the Scrum Master role with that of a programmer, and I was also supporting many cross-department initiatives. It took me some time to figure out that I was focusing on too many aspects at once, and I’ve decided to stop coding and focus only on becoming a better Scrum Master. I was lucky to join one of the departments that, at that time, needed a person with such focus.

While many people have at least some understanding of what programmers do, knowledge about the Scrum Master role is very rare. I tend to explain it in a way that I’m helping individuals, teams, and the organization responsible for making software, become more effective. The most challenging aspect of my role is to influence positive change without forcing anything or having any actual authority over people. I'm creating a place for people where they can analyze what is happening around them, plan and experiment to improve the outcome. The most exciting part is when a bunch of individuals start working together as a team.

One of my greatest achievements at SAP so far is the Team Hack – a summer internship a colleague and I were responsible for. We owned the entire process, from recruitment to organizing trainings, defining the scope and focus topics, and providing ongoing support. All of the students stayed with us after the internship ended.

We are opening the summer internship again this year and I had to call the candidates that did not make the final selection. One such call stood out. I included few pieces of advice to this candidate and told him what he could do to improve his skills and how to make a better impression during job interviews in future. I was afraid that this student is going to be sad and disappointed about the result. Instead, he was very grateful for the feedback and told me that it was so far the best recruitment process he or any of his colleagues took part in!

One of the things I appreciate the most about SAP is that people are willing to help others, regardless of the line of business or team they’re in. This is something I also try to live by.

Fun fact:

If I could have any superpower, I would like to become more stoic, as stoicism is a tool for anyone in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, and wisdom. This is not an esoteric field but something one can use to live a great life. I also have to mentioned that I love capybaras as they’re able to be stoic even without knowing anything about Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus!
