FAQ

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard classifies a company’s GHG emissions into 3 scopes:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources

  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy

  • Scope 3: All indirect emissions that are not included in Scope 2 that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream and downstream emissions

Transactional carbon accounting is the umbrella term for a future SAP offering in carbon accounting, making it possible to account for the carbon emissions of your business transactions and create a “green line” next to the bottom line.

This combines the functionalities that the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management solution, SAP Sustainability Data Exchange, and SAP S/4HANA Cloud can deliver. SAP aims to enable the calculation and sharing of accurate, granular, and comparable carbon data so that organizations can reduce their emissions and meet set goals.

Learn more about how carbon accounting works and why it matters.

SAP Sustainability Data Exchange uses the carbon data interoperability standards established by the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT), hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). PACT set the first technical specifications for standardized exchange of carbon emissions data.

The solution also draws on SAP’s experience as a founding member of Catena-X and Cofinity-X, the rapidly developing data networks for the automotive industry. These consortiums are defining their standards for carbon information exchange as an extension of the PACT framework. SAP Sustainability Data Exchange is certified by Catena-X’s conformity assessment body. In the future, SAP is also expanding to other industry networks following PACT like TfS and many more to come.

SAP Sustainability Data Exchange is built on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) as a separate application without prerequisites. It can be used standalone and is a lightweight web application that does not require installation.
