Corning: Providing engaging learning experiences to meet diverse employee needs

Explore Corning’s journey with SAP

To nurture the talent of long-tenured employees, glass and ceramic manufacturer Corning Incorporated must provide workers with the skills to keep pace in the materials science sector. With the SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone solution, the company can create user-specific workspaces where staff has simple access to all the learning tools they need to stay on top and get ahead.

The Challenge

Provide tailored, easily accessible learning to a diverse workforce

Corning employees typically stay with the company for many years, making continuous learning a critical component to business success. To keep employee skills up to speed, the company has invested in cutting-edge learning programs to support both office and field-based teams.

However, Corning’s approach to delivering these programs to its workforce – whether remote, hybrid, deskless, or contingent – needed to be reimagined. Not enough people were accessing learning tools and content, so the company looked for ways to simplify that access while also tailoring the learning experience to meet specific employee needs.

Impressed by the flexibility that the SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone solution offers to develop customized learning experiences, Corning decided to deploy the software to help better engage employees.

Preconfigured templates and guided experiences allow us to build our own use cases. For example, we can support onboarding more efficiently by delivering resources in a visually attractive and consistent way.

The Solution

Building customized learning workspaces to boost employee engagement

To better engage its workforce, Corning is using SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone to flexibly create more personalized and effective learning experiences.

Following extensive consultation with employees and applying an employee-centric, design-thinking approach, the company began creating customized learning workspaces to meet employees’ specific needs. A single point of entry to relevant resources and information makes it easier to engage with learning content. And preconfigured templates allow administrators to build use cases in an attractive and consistent way.

Available through multiple Web browsers, these workspaces can be accessed using mobile devices – opening up learning programs to both office-based personnel and contingent and field-based workforces.

The Result

One digital workspace for onboarding, collaboration, learning, and more

With SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone, Corning employees can quickly and efficiently access the resources they need.

Straightforward migration of resources from the SAP Jam collaboration platform to SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone means employees can choose from a wide range of collaborative learning tools, including the SAP SuccessFactors Learning solution. Plus, preconfigured templates and guided experiences make onboarding more efficient, user-friendly, and consistent.

The personalized user experience combined with a single entry point to third-party learning providers such as LinkedIn Learning helps employees stay engaged, connect with peers, share ideas, and build on learning in a simplified way.

The result has been a jump from 765 logons to the company’s learning hub over a three-month period to roughly 20 times that amount. Not only does this indicate a more engaged workforce, but it is also allowing Corning to reimagine the way it supports employees with the knowledge and skill-training they need to succeed.

We had just 765 logons to our previous system over a three-month period. With our new learning hubs based on SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone, we’ve seen adoption rates of around 20 times that amount.

Future Plans

Connect employees with career opportunities and drive deeper engagement

To empower employees with even more development options, such as mentorships, networking opportunities, short-term assignments, gigs, and fellowships, Corning is currently evaluating the SAP SuccessFactors Opportunity Marketplace solution. The solution helps match people to meaningful opportunities and allows everyone to learn how, where, and when they want, so that the organization can better inspire and engage its workforce.

Corning is also exploring Experience Management solutions from SAP and Qualtrics to capture continuous feedback that will help it understand the key drivers of employee engagement. Not only will this help clarify how learning and development experiences support employee needs, but it will also help improve employee sentiment by making sure workers feel heard and understood.
