Rich's Story

At SAP, we believe that when you bring everything you are, you can become everything you want.

You work with people from all walks for life and from all over the world. And much like the military, it doesn’t matter where you are from, what your ethnicity is, or what your background is – we are all one team.

Rich Redmon

Rich Redmon is a Senior Director in Information Security at SAP, having joined over 6 years ago. Outside of work, Rich loves being able to spend time with his wife and 2 kids outdoors or relaxing on the deck. He also enjoys fixing up and riding motorcycles as well as woodworking in his spare time.

I started my career in the military and have lived in various places. After leaving the military I moved to Alabama and worked for the government before moving to a software company that was later acquired by SAP (SAP Ariba). I knew who SAP was before the acquisition as the US government use SAP software, and give the scale of the business, it’s hard not to know who they were!

When I first joined, I ran an operations team that was responsible for the systems, databases and security of the environment. From there, I moved into security full-time as that was my background. SAP has a great policy on career growth and helping people do what they would like to do in their career so moving roles was seamless.

Currently I help lead a wide variety of security topics for SAP Ariba. Some of the functions I help with are implementing, managing and developing security tools, data leak prevention programs, vulnerability assessments, review security policies, risk assessments, incident investigations and forensics … just to name a few.

SAP is a very large company. I think that sometimes that scares people away from considering SAP as an employer. But SAP has a very good structure in the way they setup their lines of business. While the overall umbrella is very large, where you work seems like a smaller more intimate company. If the vastness of SAP concerns you, don’t let it. On top of that, they have great incentives (and are always introducing more), they reward employees for doing their job well and they listen from the top down. Joining SAP has been one of the best moves in my career.

During my career I have had several people that has helped mentor me and give me sound advice along the way. SAP does have a mentor program, but also plenty of senior people always willing to help and give advice when needed and asked for. A couple of my mentors have turned into really good friends and for that I am grateful. I have also taken great pride in the moments when I am able to promote team members and helping them continue to achieve their career aspirations.

When it comes to SAP’s culture, a couple things stand out to me. One is the work-home-life balance that SAP is very concerned with, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The second is a reflection on the similarity to my time in the military. There is so much diversity in SAP given its global outreach. You work with people from all walks for life and from all over the world. And much like the military, it doesn’t matter where you are from, what your ethnicity is, or what your background is – we are all one team.
