Adopting critical integration capabilities in the cloud

As the developer, owner, and operator of Singapore’s and Asia’s first open-access, multiuser liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd (SLNG) plays a vital role in the city-state’s energy security.

Prior to building the terminal, the city-state relied on importing natural gas through pipelines from Malaysia and Indonesia. With the SLNG Terminal, Singapore can now import LNG from anywhere in the world. The terminal currently supplies about 50% of Singapore’s natural gas demand for electricity generation.

Apart from ensuring uninterrupted gas supply for the domestic market, SLNG also supports a wide range of LNG-related activities, such as vessel gassing up and cooldown, storage and reload, LNG transhipment, LNG bunkering, and LNG truck loading.

On a five-year digital transformation journey with a cloud-first strategy, the organization recently transitioned its business applications to SAP solutions in the cloud and was impressed by significant efficiency gains across its business. This technology foundation readies SLNG for future growth and ongoing transformation.

However, its commercial operation was still reliant on legacy on-premise integration software that was not compatible with future cloud applications.

As we are pursuing a cloud-first strategy, SAP Integration Suite was the obvious choice for us, as it complements many other cloud solutions from SAP.

Integrating business systems in the cloud for optimal visibility

SLNG operates around the clock to fulfill its mandate to deliver a reliable, predictable, and uninterrupted supply of gas for the production of electricity. Its ability to tightly connect its business technology landscape with its customers is key to the success of its gas supply operations.

Continuous interactions with its customers include notifications such as advanced capacity bookings, day-ahead gas nominations, changes in hourly gas nominations, and hourly gas send-out allocations.

With information fed across 11 key applications and more than 100 interfaces previously, the workloads need to be processed continuously, 24x7. When faced with frequent disruptions, SLNG seized the opportunity to transform its legacy integration software by implementing SAP Integration Suite on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). SAP Integration Suite gives the organization more flexibility to connect its LNG terminal business operations to its customers’ systems, as depicted in the figure below.

Creating cohesive, information-driven operations

Before transforming its integration capabilities to the cloud, SLNG faced ongoing failures in its interfaces caused by a number of factors, including suspended messages and message sequencing issues.

Now, using SAP Integration Suite on SAP BTP, the organization has integrated all of its business applications and more than 100 interfaces across various SAP and critical third-party customer solutions, resulting in far fewer failures. This is a significant result for the organization, considering SAP BTP is processing more than 100 business-critical files, every hour, 24x7.

The ability to monitor workload-processing messages and message-failure reporting on dashboards has resulted in fewer holdups in the execution of requests, including send outs.

Furthering reliability and availability for Singapore’s energy security

To realize its vision to catalyze new possibilities in the energy transition for Singapore and beyond, SLNG is committed to enhancing energy security and supporting the development of the LNG ecosystem. It is also focused on being an advocate for sustainable energy developments and innovations. With SAP Integration Suite operating alongside SAP S/4HANA in its business, the organization has a proven and reliable, enterprise-grade IT landscape that allows it to achieve its business ambitions.
