Frequently asked questions

FAQs

A business process is a defined sequence of connected workflows, activities, and tasks designed to achieve a particular result. Process automation describes the digitalisation of some or all of these components with the aim to improve the efficiency, agility, and compliance of the business process.

Process automation solutions increase the automated level of an organisation beyond the standardised best-practice processes delivered by enterprise applications. They enable organisations to address unique business requirements, respond to changing market conditions, or automate manual or semimanual process steps that precede or accompany transactions in enterprise applications.

Low-code/no-code solutions enable IT organisations to address both developer scarcity and the need to quickly respond to fast-changing market conditions and business requirements. By giving business users with process expertise an intuitive, tool that matches their technical skill set, organisations can broaden their pool of employees who can drive process automations. And professional developers improve their agility by leveraging visual drag-and-drop tools and prebuilt process automation content.

The SAP Build portfolio brings together SAP Build Apps, SAP Build Process Automation, and SAP Build Work Zone into a unified development experience. The unified developer experience provides centralised access to the solutions in the portfolio, unified lifecycle management, and monitoring capabilities. Sharing of reusable artifacts such as UX components, workflows, automations, data models and business logic fosters collaboration within teams and across projects. Custom code for complex business logic or APIs can be exposed in an easy-to-use fashion within SAP Build solutions, driving greater productivity and collaboration between fusion teams on projects.

SAP Build solutions enable business users with varying skill levels to create and augment enterprise applications, process automations, and business sites with drag-and-drop simplicity.

A typical scenario is the digitalisation of a paper-based process that precedes a transaction in a business application. Think of field workers who take notes on their tour and then enter these into a business application on their return to the office, for example, to trigger a service order. Digitalising this process using a mobile device to enter these notes directly into the business application means the field workers can spend less time on back-office tasks and more time in the field. Also, that service order is triggered right away, speeding up cycle time.

Another classic automation scenario is the digitalisation of a semiautomated process. Consider purchase requisitions that are sent to the approving manager through e-mail. They may be sent back and forth for clarification, get stuck in overflowing in-boxes, or, if additional approvals are required, get forwarded to the correct approver. Unfortunately, this is an error-prone process, with uncertain cycle times, and one that can be hard to audit.

A clearly defined digital process flow helps you collect the required information and follow business rules to route to the correct approvers, accelerating cycle times and improving governance. If the digital purchase requisition process is integrated with the procurement application, the approval can automatically trigger the purchase order without requiring the requestor to enter the information again.
