KOPGT: Nurturing commercial
agriculture growth for smallholder
farmers
Kalangala Oil Palm Growers Trust (KOPGT) is a farming organization administering government
loans to farmers and providing fertilizer, seedlings, and other services to help smallholder
farmers grow their businesses. KOPGT also provides sales and marketing services for the
farmers, sharing knowledge on how to reduce postservice losses and helping farmers
participate in the production cycle for oil palm.
Through its work, KOPGT actively helps individuals move from subsistence farming into
commercial oil palm farming, significantly improving their livelihoods. As more farmers joined
the organization, it was important for KOPGT to have a robust sourcing and traceability
system linked to its business management data. The goal was to enable more efficiency and
effectiveness in its service delivery while empowering farmers with data-driven insights to
make more-informed decisions.

Enabling trust through data transparency, helping communities to
increase household incomes and living standards
Kalangala Oil Palm Growers Trust (KOPGT) is working with communities in Central Uganda
to help them embrace commercial agriculture in place of subsistence farming practices.
An important part of its work centers on helping smallholder farmers embrace technology
and trust data-driven insights to address specific production challenges. To deliver these
important insights, KOPGT integrated the SAP Rural Sourcing Management solution with
the SAP Business One solution. SAP Rural Sourcing Management, an industry cloud
solution, also helps the organization comply with Uganda’s national guidelines for
monitoring farmer plantings and areas of plantings by making data more transparent.
KOPGT is also making use of garden mapping functionality offered by SAP Rural Sourcing
Management to understand the yield potential of each garden and monitor production
activity. As farmers need to repay government loans, by keeping gardens at maximum
production capacity, farmers are able to harvest maximum yields. And by allowing the
organization’s team to gather and manage data for analysis and decision-making, KOPGT
has a clear overview of individual farmer performance for benchmarking and productivity
tracking to support loan financing and repayment cycles.
