Setting the stage to deploy an entire IT infrastructure from scratch
The history of the industrialization of shale in Brazil, now operated by PX Energy, began in 1954 with the exploration of shale in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. In 1959, the company’s owner at the time developed a plan to build a shale processing plant in São Mateus do Sul. The first production plant began operating in 1972, and completion of a second unit in 1991 consolidated the company’s strong position in the shale extraction and processing sector.
The company emerged in November 2022 after acquisition by a new owner. Today, PX Energy’s refinery runs continuous processes in the exploitation of shale, producing oil, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel gas, and sulfur and fertilizer inputs. The company’s focus is to remain a global reference in shale industrialization. To achieve this, it seeks to form strategic partnerships, add value to products and services, and offer customers the best solutions for their businesses. Additionally, it is committed to sustainability and the development of the local community.
Running these operations requires robust systems, but PX Energy’s change of ownership in 2022 left the company without its own technology landscape. Supported by a lean IT team, PX Energy set out to rapidly implement an infrastructure that would allow for the deployment of ERP and other satellite systems. Whatever solution it chose also needed to provide fast access to information for real-time decision-making.

Unlocking the potential of a modern ERP system
PX Energy decided RISE with SAP was the right choice to underpin its new technology landscape and help it implement SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. RISE with SAP offers AI-enabled cloud ERP managed and optimized by SAP. Services and tools built using a clean core approach help organizations migrate on-premise systems, transform business processes, promote innovation, and unlock agility.
The former operator of the shale industrialization unit was already using SAP S/4HANA. Additionally, by committing to implement a new ERP system in a very short period, PX Energy knew RISE with SAP would help it complete this complex operation on time. The solution would allow the adoption of an integrated software system without the need for infrastructural investment. Also attractive were the reference architecture provided by SAP and the high availability of the IT environment. The native services in RISE with SAP were another crucial factor in the decision to take advantage of the solution.
During the project, PX Energy’s implementation partners, SoftwareOne and Ábaco Consulting Brasil, provided specialized consulting in design and scope definition, as well as effective management. This helped ensure the progress of the project and the success of the implementation.

Innovating and thriving in the cloud after a timely deployment
Having implemented SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition with RISE with SAP in only 7 months, significantly faster than the originally estimated 12 months, PX Energy now has a modern, future-proof cloud ERP solution. A key contributor to this speedy deployment was the adoption of standard ERP processes enabled by RISE with SAP.
In addition to smooth integration between systems, the company benefits from the ability to use SAP Business Technology Platform to quickly develop new applications such as a customer portal connected with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition.
As well as enjoying increased security and high availability of its new IT environment, PX Energy can now access diverse business information from a single source in real time, facilitating agile decision-making.
