Maxion Wheels: Achieving enterprise-wide operational transparency in a growing organization

Creating a business data fabric for trusted reporting
Growing through multiple mergers and acquisitions, Maxion Wheels found that getting a comprehensive overview of its operations could be a challenge. The automotive supplier deployed the SAP Datasphere solution to connect instances of the SAP ERP application across numerous companies, sites, and countries.

Keeping the world in motion by setting the standard for wheel production
Since the very beginning of automobile production, Maxion Wheels has designed and manufactured wheels to meet the needs of customers around the world. Leading the field in the development of lighter, more sustainable and cost-efficient products, the company produces 50 million wheels a year at 24 plants.
Appreciating the importance of a solid technological foundation in supporting high-performing operations and ongoing innovation, Maxion Wheels has a long-established SAP software landscape. However, multiple instances of SAP ERP and an ongoing phased migration to the SAP Cloud ERP Private package meant that getting an overview across different plants required time-consuming, manual consolidation of reports.
To help it make strategic, company-wide decisions, Maxion Wheels wanted to offer ready access to operational performance information across the organization. It therefore decided to build a business data fabric architecture allowing it to harmonize sources across different landscapes.

Harmonizing data for standardized business reporting
To support a centralized business data fabric, Maxion Wheels chose SAP Datasphere, part of the SAP Business Data Cloud solution. The ability to connect to both SAP software and third-party solutions using comprehensive integration capabilities in SAP Integration Suite was a key factor in this decision.
Starting with a pilot project to deploy sales reporting functionality at a production plant in Turkey, the IT team created a standardized product and customer hierarchy in SAP Datasphere. It then mapped data from SAP ERP to create a harmonized set of data for reporting.
The intuitive user experience offered by SAP Datasphere meant that IT staff were quickly up to speed with using the solution. In addition, the company used SAP Services and Support to access guidance and advice from expert data architects, helping ensure that the data harmonization ran smoothly.

Managing the business more effectively based on trusted data
For staff in the sales department at Maxion Wheels in Turkey, report generation no longer means working with multiple data sources and then reconciling information in Microsoft Excel—a process that could take days. Instead, with SAP Datasphere in place, reports are available within just a few hours, freeing staff to spend more time talking to customers.
Data integrity is another area where SAP Datasphere is delivering invaluable benefits. While previously, employees needed to check and double-check data in reports to ensure that it was reliable and accurate, they now have information they can trust.
With rapid access to sales insights, sales managers can make sound, data-driven decisions. From allocating accounts to specific sales personnel to targeting a particular group of customers, they can make informed choices that drive successful business outcomes.
Rolling into the future with organization-wide operational transparency
Going forward, Maxion Wheels aims to roll out SAP Datasphere across all business functions, including supply chain, finance, production planning, and purchasing. It also plans to deploy the solution across all its sites, including those that don’t currently have an ERP from SAP but will shortly as part of the ongoing company-wide transition to SAP Cloud ERP Private.
Meanwhile, SAP Datasphere will support the company as it continues to grow and enter new markets, enabling IT teams to quickly connect existing software run by new acquisitions. In this way, Maxion Wheels can realize its goal of achieving organization-wide operational transparency.
