Customer Snapshot: Business Model

Improving Lives with High-Tech Sensors

EarlySense is a high-tech startup company with expertise in hospital bed monitoring devices. Partnering with SAP to make this complex vision a simple reality, their newest device is a wellness sensor much like their hospital bed sensor, which can be slipped under the mattress to detect and monitor vital signs.

Designed to use for anyone at home, the wellness sensor measures heart rate, respiration rate, and sleep and movement patterns, then sends the data via the cloud to the user’s mobile app. The information is tracked and analyzed and can be shared with medical providers, friends and family.

EarlySense started in hospitals.

Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy

Taking Wellness Into Your Own Hands

Bringing this technology to laymen in the future promises not only to provide critical preventative warnings for chronically ill people, but to empower anyone to take a proactive approach to their own wellness. Aging people can be more independent, and even improve their health in many cases.

Transitioning medical devices into the personal wellness world.

The Challenge

Making it Simple to Monitor Our Own Well-Being

Stress is a symptom of our highly competitive society and affects the quality of our sleep if we don’t manage it well. If the stress of our day is not relieved before going to sleep at night, then stress hormones are increasingly produced which increases blood pressure and can contribute to headaches, insomnia, heart problems, stomach pains, allergies and tension.

Using wearable or wellness technology like EarlySense offers people incentive and support with greater self-awareness by monitoring their own habits and patterns, enabling them to actually affect a change in their health with diet, exercise, sports, meditation and/or other interventions.

Take stress as an example, which can affect and be affected by the quality of sleep we get. By the year 2020, an estimated 50% of sick leave will be due to stress. The EarlySense wellness sensor can help improve sleep quality, thereby lowering stress.

Guess What’s Going On Under Your Mattress

Supported on the SAP Cloud Platform, the system uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities. On a user-permitted basis, data is sent via an app to a mobile device, and shared for healthcare, research, or personal purposes. Keeping it simple enough for everyday users was paramount for the transition from medical to personal wellness device.

Needing an easy and customizable user interface.

Especially when tracked over a period of time, this data can tell us a lot about how healthy we are. It can also offer trending graphs for sleep and stress, for instance.
