Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy

Seamless Mobility. Seamless Acquisitions

Smith Micro sells to all the large mobile providers, allowing people to connect smart phones and laptops to any network and keep their wireless connection as they roam.

Unique Strategy.

Since part of Smith Micro’s growth strategy is through acquisitions, it’s important to be able to expand the system as these acquisitions come on board.

Growth through Acquisition.

The Challenge

Growing Big and Staying Close

Smith Micro has grown aggressively, both organically and by acquisition. But their aging accounting system couldn’t keep up with the growth. Decision makers lacked real-time information and had no access to analytics at the executive level. It was time to replace the accounting system, both to maintain responsiveness and ensure scalability.

Enter SAP

Integration, Scalability, and a Single License Fee

Smith Micro needed an ERP application to relieve the current pressure points and facilitate growth and diversification. They evaluated SAP software and similar offerings from Oracle Corporation. The big differentiator: all functions in an SAP Business All-in-One solution are fully integrated. And the single license fee was attractive as well.

What we needed was a scalable, integrated enterprise resource planning solution that would recognize multiple currencies and record a transaction in real time in all affected modules.

Working Together

The success of Smith Micro’s SAP Business All-in-One solution owes a lot to smooth teamwork among the accounting staff members and the RJT implementation crew. Working together, their speed and efficiency kept the project aligned with the corporate vision of flexibility and scalability.

Implementation was Great.

Better Business

Greater Visibility

SAP’s Business All-in-One solution proved its worth almost immediately by eliminating cumbersome multiple spreadsheets from the old accounting system at Smith Micro. The SAP Business All-in-One solution automated most of their tasks and gave them visibility upstream and downstream, so they could understand their contributions in a larger context.

Better Business: Benefits

Not Two Weeks. Two Days

The biggest win: ease of reconciliation at period closing.

Before implementing SAP, monthly closing took about two weeks, and Smith Micro could barely close its quarters before the deadline set by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Today, even with the lag inherent in third-party processing, the subsidiaries are reconciled within two days.

Keeping IT Costs Down.

Better Business: Run Simple

Maintaining Momentum

Since the SAP software implementation, Smith Micro has managed several years of high growth, boosting gross revenues 50% and sales staff growth 30%. And during growth spurts, the headcount in accounting has remained unchanged. This is truly doing more with less.

Empowered for Growth

With SAP in place, Smith Micro’s plan for the future is to continue to wield state-of-the-art software tools to empower further growth through diversification and acquisition.
