Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy

Treating Each Patient as an Individual

The Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital is committed to restoring the physical and psychological health of patients. Known for providing personalized care, the hospital sets time aside to fully understand the individual needs of each patient, and employs leading technology to pave the way for continued success.

Allocating time for each patient.

The Challenge

Making Data Useful

For clinicians at the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital to effectively diagnose and treat patients, speed and transparency are very important. Early adoption of a central hospital information system helped the hospital’s IT department develop an extensive patient file system over the years. But performance bottlenecks and combinations of structured and unstructured data sometimes impeded information access.
Furthermore, the existing IT landscape did not support mobile data availability at the point of care.
What we always wanted was a mobile solution that would allow us to access exactly the data which we have in a PC in real-time and on-site during ward rounds as well.

Enter SAP

An Ideal Solution
After reviewing their specific requirements with SAP, it became clear that SAP Electronic Medical Record could provide Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital with the mobile flexibility clinicians were looking for. Plus, the SAP Afaria mobile device management solution would help keep confidential patient data more secure.
Hospital and SAP stakeholders also concluded that upgrading and migrating applications to the SAP HANA platform could improve operational reporting and applications, reduce overall IT costs, and – most importantly – further enhance patient care.

Collaboration Speeds the Way

Once SAP Electronic Medical Record was selected, the hospital´s IT department and SAP Consulting collaborated on customizing and integrating the solution. The initial project was completed quickly; after just two weeks of implementation and one week of testing, the hospital’s orthopedic ward successfully went live with the mobile app.

Remote implementation keeps costs low.

Next, Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital migrated its SAP ERP application and SAP for Healthcare solutions to the SAP HANA in-memory computing platform. That three-month process was followed by the deployment of SAP Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA. To ensure system performance and availability, SAP engaged T-Systems Austria to host SAP HANA in high-availability clusters on dedicated servers.

Better Business

Patient Info Where It’s Needed

By implementing SAP Electronic Medical Record, the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital can now bring medical data to the doctor’s fingertips on iOS or Android tablets. During daily ward rounds, doctors can access all relevant patient information – even medical images from a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) – in real-time and discuss them with the patient on the spot.

Answering patient questions immediately.

The SAP HANA implementation has helped reduce data load times, resulting in dramatically faster access that supports functions ranging from operational and clinical reporting to patient scheduling. In fact, patient scheduling software performance has improved by 3,000%. Furthermore advanced data compression with SAP HANA has helped minimize Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital’s data from approximately 760 GB to about 430 GB.

By unifying our software landscape on SAP HANA, we not only achieved a lower total cost of ownership but also paved the way for future innovation. For instance, we can now further enhance patient care in the most critical situations by making mass patient data immediately available to medical staff in the intensive care unit. –Christian Mühltaler, CIO, Kardinal Schwarzenberg'sches Krankenhaus Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H.

Better Business: Benefits

Fulfilling the Commitment to Healing and Service

Clinicians make the most of their time with patients, ensure that the hospital functions smoothly, and even help patients schedule appointments with greater ease. This saves Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital time and money, helps the clinical staff make better informed decisions, and greatly improves overall service quality.

A tool hospital staff can use every day.

We can definitely say that we are more relaxed during patient visits – and have less stress.

Better Business: Run Simple

Show and Tell

Today, the benefits of the mobile app are clearly visible. Patients see how doctors react more quickly to urgent conditions. And in cases such as complicated surgery, patients can discuss matters with their doctors in greater detail, see relevant data on a mobile device, and have the surgeon explain the procedure using multimedia visual aids.

An advantage to the patient.

Because patient confidentiality is mandated by law and upheld by principle, SAP Afaria enables the hospital’s IT department to administer and configure mobile devices to securely manage patient data. The SAP Mobile Platform allows only relevant data to be shown to device users with proper credentials.

100% Guaranteed.

And with critical applications now running on SAP HANA in hosted, high-availability clusters, clinicians can diagnose and treat patient conditions more effectively. Real-time data access supports informed decision making at the point of care, thus helping improve health outcomes. For administrators, SAP HANA supports reporting, patient scheduling, and other applications to help ensure that operational processes and the non-medical parts of the patient experience are as efficient as possible.

Journey Ahead

More Mobility, More Efficiency

The Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital considers their SAP Electronic Medical Report project a true success story. And in combination with SAP HANA, Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital can extend its use of Big Data to the most time-critical settings – such as emergency and intensive care – where rapid data access and analysis has the most significant lifesaving potential.
