Frequently asked questions

Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions that occur across a company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. Defined under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, they include emissions from activities such as purchased goods and services, transportation, product use, and end-of-life treatment. Scope 3 emissions often represent the largest share of an organization’s overall carbon footprint.

Carbon accounting is the process of measuring, tracking, and reporting greenhouse gas emissions generated by an organization’s activities. It helps organizations understand their carbon footprint so they can manage emissions, meet reporting requirements, and support decarbonization goals.

Carbon accounting software from SAP helps organizations measure, manage, and report greenhouse gas emissions across scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 with financial grade rigor. It enables companies to link emissions data to business activities, apply consistent controls, and support sustainability reporting and decarbonization efforts.

Within SAP’s sustainability portfolio, SAP Sustainability Data Exchange facilitates trusted carbon data exchange across supply chains using standardized methods, improving the quality and transparency of scope 3 data. This data integrates natively with SAP Sustainability Footprint Management to calculate accurate, granular carbon footprints.

Solutions such as SAP Green Ledger further extend carbon accounting by embedding emissions data into core financial processes, enabling organizations to manage carbon with the same discipline as financial data.

SAP Sustainability Data Exchange uses the carbon data interoperability standards established by the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT), hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). PACT set the first technical specifications for standardized exchange of carbon emissions data.

There are several widely used ESG frameworks and standards, each designed for different reporting needs and levels of regulatory maturity. They include:

  • IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, developed by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), provide a global baseline for sustainability‑related financial disclosures.

  • Task Force on Climate‑related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), established by the Financial Stability Board, focus on climate‑related risks and opportunities.

  • European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), created to support reporting under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and alignment with the EU Taxonomy.

  • GRI Standards, developed by the Global Reporting Initiative, provide a comprehensive framework for reporting an organization’s economic, environmental, and social impacts.

Sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting software helps organizations measure, manage, and communicate sustainability performance with greater consistency and insight. It brings together data from across the enterprise—including sustainability, safety, risk, compliance, assets, and people—to support reliable reporting and informed decision‑making.

By providing a centralized view of ESG data, this software enables organizations to track progress against sustainability goals, meet reporting requirements, and deliver actionable insights to internal and external stakeholders.

SAP offers a range of supply chain sustainability solutions as part of SAP Supply Chain Management to help organizations design, operate, and manage more sustainable supply chains. These solutions support sustainable compliance and product design through SAP Responsible Design and Production while also helping organizations improve sustainability across logistics operations.

SAP’s supply chain sustainability capabilities extend across warehouse management, transportation management, logistics management, and yard management—enabling organizations to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency, and support responsible operations across the supply chain.
