Balancing global scale with the need to innovate without disruption

From powering hyperscale cloud infrastructure to connecting continents through submarine cables, Prysmian enables energy and data to flow across the globe.

With more than 100 plants and over 30 ERP systems supporting this worldwide reach, Prysmian faced fragmented processes and inconsistent data, slowing decisions and limiting visibility.

At the same time, the pressure to adopt artificial intelligence was increasing. For Prysmian, the challenge was about not just embracing innovation but also doing so while protecting business continuity. Teams needed to keep the business running while modernizing how work gets done.

Without a harmonized foundation, scaling AI across plants would remain slow and inconsistent. Prysmian needed a single system to unify processes, standardize data, and enable innovation at global scale.

We thought the only way to harmonize processes was to have a single system. We have 100 plants, but we cannot have 100 different ways of working.

Unifying business processes and embedding AI

Prysmian chose the RISE with SAP journey to help it build a single, scalable digital core. Using SAP Cloud ERP Private solutions, the company consolidated its more than 30 ERP systems on one global platform.

Nearly 90 plants adopted standardized processes, enabling consistent execution worldwide. The transformation was completed in just four months, with only 48 hours of downtime, ensuring minimal disruption to production.

With a clean core approach and SAP Business AI Platform, Prysmian created a unified data foundation connecting information across functions and workflows. This lets it quickly deploy innovations developed in one location across diverse plants.

The company also applied embedded AI capabilities within SAP solutions directly into core workflows. This meant it could automatically convert customer orders received by email into sales orders, reducing manual work and enabling consistent handling across regions. Meanwhile, in finance, AI could match incoming payments with invoices, automating reconciliation activities that previously required significant manual effort.

These embedded AI capabilities also help Prysmian accelerate adoption and scale innovation without the need for customization.

Thanks to SAP solutions, we were able to go to the cloud and start using embedded AI. Now, we can deliver innovation much more quickly across all our plants.

Accelerating efficiency, innovation, and employee impact

With a harmonized digital core in place, Prysmian has significantly improved the speed and consistency of work worldwide. Core activities are now approximately 25% faster, while the shared foundation has the potential to accelerate the deployment of digital solutions by 50%, enabling faster scaling across Prysmian.

At the same time, embedded AI is delivering measurable impact at the process level. Automating sales order creation reduces the time customer service teams spend on manual data entry, freeing up close to 30% of their time for customer-focused activities. In finance, AI-driven reconciliation reduces the effort required for accounting tasks by more than 70%, allowing teams to focus on higher-value analysis and decision-making.

What’s more, because these capabilities are built on standardized processes and shared data, they can be scaled across plants globally, turning local improvements into enterprise-wide gains in efficiency and performance.

The impact of this transformation was recognized in 2026, when Prysmian was named an SAP Innovation Award winner in the Industry Leader—Energy & Natural Resources category.

The time saved is not about reducing people. It’s about allowing our teams to focus more on customers, extract value from data, and drive innovation instead of performing repetitive tasks.

Building a foundation for the Autonomous Enterprise

Prysmian is becoming a more data-driven and intelligent company. With a unified digital core, harmonized business processes, trusted data, and embedded AI capabilities, it has established a foundation that allows innovation to scale consistently throughout the organization.

Looking ahead, Prysmian continues to explore how AI can help connect insights, decisions, and business actions across the company. Future innovations such as Joule Agents have the potential to support employees by simplifying routine activities, accelerating quotation processes, and helping teams respond more quickly to customer demand while maintaining the governance and context required for responsible execution.

At the same time, intelligence is extending beyond internal processes and into products and services. Smart cables capable of generating asset performance data can help enable predictive maintenance, improved asset performance, and new service-driven business models, creating value beyond physical infrastructure.

By bringing together data, AI, and connected workflows, Prysmian is creating a foundation for the Autonomous Enterprise, enabling its people to focus on strategy, innovation, and customer value while intelligent technologies increasingly support execution at global scale.
