Customer Snapshot: History

Industry Foundations Above and Below Ground

What started as a two-man machine shop in 1884, now provides more than 90 percent of the world’s surface mines with shovels, draglines, and drilling machinery. Similarly, what started as drawings from a 20-year-old correspondence course graduate became the foundation for what is now a global leader in the development, manufacture, distribution, and service of underground mining machinery. The two companies, P&H, and Joy Mining Machinery, merged in 1994 to become Joy Global Inc.

Customer Snapshot: Business Model

Mining Equipment Experts

Joy Global manufactures and markets original equipment and aftermarket parts, and provides value-added services for the surface and underground mining industries. Joy Global's products and related services are used extensively for the mining of coal, copper, iron ore, oil sands, gold, and other mineral resources.

Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy

Committed to Safety and Savings

Joy Global is committed to helping customers mine ores and minerals at the lowest possible cost. The company’s strategy is built around lifecycle management to ensure maximum equipment uptime. Joy Global also considers it a responsibility to ensure the safety of every employee through continual product improvements and safety training.

The Challenge

Find, Fix, and Eliminate: How to Empower OpEx

Performance, safety, and profitability all benefit from operational excellence initiatives like the one at Joy Global. But multiple systems prevented the global data sharing and analysis. Joy Global serves customers from more than 130 facilities worldwide, and the company wanted to boost customer productivity and service levels by gaining better control of their supply chain and deeper insight into their own products and manufacturing by expanding use of SAP solutions.

Meeting daily requirements.

From Paper to Digits and Bytes

Traditional paper-based methods of training and knowledge transfer can’t adequately support the expansion of Joy Global’s manufacturing and service businesses into emerging markets in China and Russia. Joy Global was looking for an end-to-end solution that would increase the speed of information transfer—for both employees and customers—and eliminate the looming expense of producing and printing training and service manuals.

Enter SAP

Expanding their Valuable Relationship

Joy Global has been an SAP customer since 1996, and the two companies have cultivated a partnership that focuses on innovation and process excellence. During the two companies’ partnership, SAP has helped provide everyone at Joy Global, from the executive offices to the manufacturing floors, with clearer views into important information. This visibility continually helps identify synergies among engineering, manufacturing, service management, and finance.

One model for everything.

The heavy machinery that Joy Global manufactures requires maintenance to minimize customer downtime. Accordingly, Joy Global wants to optimize their supply chain to have parts available when customers need them. Joy Global turned to SAP for their supply chain experience to straddle the fine line that separates the overhead of carrying too much inventory from the expense and inconvenience to customers when a part is not available.

Joy Global provides basic, product and job-specific training to workers at every skill level and every position within the surface and underground mining industry. The company sought solutions that could convey concepts and information about complex equipment easily and more powerfully than could be done with two-dimensional drawings and schematic diagrams. They needed to improve knowledge transfer, particularly for end user safety and productivity.
SAP’s 3D Visual Enterprise Author application creates interactive, three-dimensional visualizations using data and assets from Joy Global’s computer-aided design (CAD) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions. Richer, more realistic visualizations of equipment and its proper use, shown with the SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Viewer application, improves the effectiveness of safety and process training, and creates a safer and more productive workplace.

Enter SAP: The SAP Experience

Immediate and Extensive Benefits

Joy Global quickly recognized the potential impact of implementing 3D visualization solutions from SAP. The broad usefulness of the information to manufacturing, training, and service personnel offered the chance to reduce the costs of printing training and service manuals, and simultaneously improve the overall user experience for both training and operations.

Furthermore, 3D visualization solutions from SAP help develop deeper understanding of product construction and use, thus enabling continuous process improvement. To help Joy Global promote the solution internally, personnel from SAP assisted in drafting the business case that was submitted to Joy Global’s executive management.

To provide additional control of and visibility into Joy Global’s worldwide operations, SAP recommended expanding implementations of SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP) and SAP Business Planning and Consolidation applications. With the SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP MII), Joy Global can combine factory floor data with data from SAP ERP so shop floor managers can see in real-time how they are performing relative to production plans.

Joy Global is improving data visibility into their vast network of suppliers with the SAP Supply Network Collaboration (SAP SNC) application. With SAP Enterprise Inventory and Service-Level Optimization, Joy Global can more effectively analyze the links between inventory investments and customer service goals.

Better Business

The SAP applications enable Joy Global to combine information such as design metadata, manufacturing and assembly processes, supplier information, inventory levels, and costs, and shapes them into a visual presentation. Employees and customers have access to information that lets them visualize equipment, helping improve speed, efficiency, and safety.

The latest investments Joy Global has made in SAP ERP and SAP Business Planning and Consolidation are paying dividends throughout the organization, from finance to supply chain to customer satisfaction. For example, a typical electric shovel contains more than 18,000 parts. Joy Global remotely tracks the performance of every vehicle and collects every service request, repair job, and replacement part for every machine in the field and is using the data to forecast refurbishment requirements, both for their customers and their own inventories.

Better Business: Run Simple

Everything is “Net Gain”

3D visualization solutions from SAP are ideal for using enterprise-wide data to inform and educate global audiences. They also excel at consistently supplying those audiences with the latest information. Furthermore, Joy Global’s total cost of ownership of the software is completely offset by the revenues the company generates by selling the training and service content.

Big but Agile

Despite the size and geographic dispersion of the company and its operations, Joy Global has achieved a kind of flexibility that helps ensure the productivity and satisfaction of its customers. The ability to gather data quickly and drill down into it helps stakeholders at all levels of the company gain insights, spot trends, and react appropriately. Customer service levels have increased five basis points and customers have positively acknowledged that parts are available when they need them.

Journey Ahead

Investment in Program Excellence

The additional insight into their products and processes provided by the capabilities of 3D visualization solutions from SAP, including interactive three-dimensional visualization, is enabling Joy Global to develop operational excellence programs, which helps identify further process improvements, productivity increases, training revenues, and worker safety initiatives.

Simplification to Reduce Waste

Within their operational excellence model, Joy Global is continually searching for ways to automate and simplify processes with the goal of eliminating waste and improving customer services. Using SAP to help track the performance of machinery in the field will help Joy Global refine their forecasting capabilities and the velocity at which they can react to both market and customer demands.
