At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.
SAP offers a lot of ways to be kept in the loop of current software development trends with online trainings, distributing free access to educational platforms like “Pluralsight” and others. You can also try different roles by attending programs that enable you to join other teams worldwide.
I’m Tomasz Kuryłek and I am a Senior developer at SAP Labs Poland in Gliwice. I am originally from Bytombut last year I moved to Wrocław during the pandemic to take advantage of working remotely.
My career started early in mid school. I was designing web pages and sharing my work on a website for graphic designers – “digart.pl”. It was never my intention to generate revenue from that, but I was approached by different people asking if I was willing to sell my work and so I did. Additionally, at the same time I started hosting a website with free flash games. At some point I decided to create my own games and share them. I bought a book “Macromedia Flash 5 Actionscript for Fun and Games” by Gary Rosenzweig and learned my first programming language. I think this was the moment in my life where I realized that I enjoy coding more than designing websites.
My professional career as a Software Developer started at a software outsourcing company. I learned a lot there and it was a perfect place to start. However, with time I realized that I easily become attached to the products I was developing. I started looking for a job opportunity that would enable me to be more focused on a product instead of project, thus I decided to try working with SAP.
My new job was very different, we were not only developing the solution but also were responsible for running it. My team was free to choose the technologies and processes to accomplish our goals. We were also participating in supporting our customers with their issues and problems, monitoring our services and making sure that everything is tested properly.
I am now responsible for developing an Authorization Service which supports multiple services and solutions in commerce related products. Above all, it must be secure, performant and well-designed as it’s part of most business-critical processes. It enables our customers (and their customers) to log in to their accounts and use the software accordingly to their roles.
In my day-to-day work I often find myself working on features to enable our service to be more easily adapted by other teams, resolving performance issues, or having a discussion with my team members about potential improvements in our product or development processes. I think everyone in the team has impact on the product. We have an architecture session where anyone can discuss and present their ideas to the rest of the team. Additionally, I’m involved in initiatives which aim to spread the knowledge about building resilient CI/CD setup for cloud development teams.
It’s important for me to maintainan up-to-date personal development plan and receive ongoing feedback. SAP offers a lot of ways to be kept in the loop of current software development trends with online trainings, distributing free access to educational platforms like “Pluralsight” and others. You can also try different roles by attending programs that enable you to join other teams worldwide. I have managed to test my skills at different technologies besides Java, like Golang or NodeJS. I was also able to try different cloud solutions like Cloud Foundry, AWS or Azure. Right now, I think my biggest achievement is yet to come – I’d like to become Software Architect. Currently I’m working with my direct manager on a couple of personalized goals that should allow me to improve my presentation skills.
I appreciate the fact that even though the SAP is a very big company, I’m able to maintain very good relations with other co-workers regardless of their role. I like the fact that we do not work in silos. Being software developer does not mean that you cannot contribute to testing or architecture topics.
Outside of work I enjoy going out with my friends. Usually, we meet at popular places in Katowice, having a drink or eat good food together.
I also try to maintain a balanced diet and regularly go to gym as I often spend a lot of time sitting in front of the computer screen.
