Tree planting at SAP
SAP is committed to help plant 25 million trees and fund wetland
conservation by 2030. This includes supporting trusted partners and
communities to reforest a diversity of trees and enable the protection of
existing forests. It also includes funding the conservation and rewetting of
coastal and inland wetlands such as bogs and mangrove swamps.
By the end of 2024, we helped trusted partners plant over 20 million
trees on behalf of SAP since 2012. In more than 25 countries, our climate
donations, investments in carbon credits, and sponsorships have
generated strong benefits for people, climate, and biodiversity.
Project highlights 2024:
1. Reforest Now: Leuser Ecosystem - We supported ReForest Now and
their partner, the Orangutan Information Centre, to plant a total of 140k native
trees and restore heavily degraded areas of the Gunung Leuser National
Park in close collaboration with local communities in Indonesia. The remote
reforestation project can help to restore regional econszstem services, such
as water availabilitz and resilience to drought, heat protection, and provide
income opportunities for local communities who support the collection,
cultivaion, planting, and maintenance of native trees.
2. The Carbon Community: The Glandwr Forest - SAP continued
to partner with The Carbon Community, a UK charity on a mission to
accelerate carbon removal in trees and soil through breakthrough
science. Their first landmark project aims to uncover a new
reforestation approach, rooted in science, to enhance and speed up
CO2 sequestration in trees and soil to address the climate crisis. We
contributed financially to the field trial, led by a world-class team of
scientists, during the first five years of the study. In addition, we sent
volunteers to support the fieldwork and donated trees to help grow the
SAP Forest UK, a project started by employees who began fundraising for
The Carbon Community in 2020.
3. Trillion Trees - We continued supporting BirdLife and community
groups to plant, monitor, and protect 25k Polylepis trees and restore the
high-Andean forests in Bolivia’s Tunari National Park. Over 90% of the
Andean Polylepis Forest was destroyed by causes such as cattle grazing,
forest fires, and harvesting. Restoration is of vital importance to people,
wildlife, and climate. The forest serves as a carbon sink, prevents soil
erosion, and helps glacial meltwater reach millions of people depending
on it for agriculture and drinking.
