Zoey Shi

In the summer of 2014, I received a phone call from a headhunter asking if I’d be interested in an opportunity with SAP. My language abilities and international project work experience had caught their eye. After a short but intensive interview, I was offered a position in an on-site project team based in Hangzhou. People say first impressions matter, and I was thoroughly charmed by the professionalism and warmth of the SAP team. When a company cares about it employees it shows from every interaction.

Four years have gone by in a flash, and life at SAP has been a whirlwind of variety and challenging opportunities. After my first project, I transferred to the Shanghai office where I worked in project operations, followed by a stint in marketing and communications. Presently, I am a member of the Intelligent Enterprise Group and provide business support for Customer Success (DBS), SAP’s consulting and services arm, primarily supporting Premium Engagement, SAP’s highest level of collaboration and expertise offered to our customers.

The work at SAP can be complex and daunting, especially for a newcomer. This is perfectly normal. But with hands-on experience, a wealth of training resources at your fingertips and supervised guidance, your knowledge and business expertise will grow exponentially. Before working for SAP, I was equipped with basic project management skills, mostly limited to the power industry. I wasn’t familiar with ERP terminology and terms, let alone the complex delivery model of SAP systems. I felt utterly lost when I was first assigned to the on-site project team. On my first day, despite his exhausting workload and busy schedule, my project manager spent an hour explaining the SAP ecosystem and the project life cyclein depth. He shared his experience of first joining SAP, which gave me great encouragement and confidence.

Since then, I’ve met many colleagues who have offered me help and support without hesitation, and I can proudly say that I’ve grown into a role where I can return the favor in critical situations. At SAP, people provide you with strong and timely support wherever and whenever you need it, empowering you to grow beyond your limitations.

SAP is more than a workplace. It is diverse and inclusive community where you can explore your full potential. The company is devoted to helping employees seek balance between work and life. At SAP Greater China (GC), we have employee dancing clubs, a badminton club and fitness academy led by colleagues who double up as coaches. I am the co-founder of the DBS GC photography studio that boasts many talented members. One of the club’s initiatives involved shooting customer-facing profile photos for the management team and our colleagues, recording sparkling moments in DBS GC along the way. We couldn’t have done it without the sponsorship and support of the wider team, and it exemplifies how SAP encourages employees to explore their personal passions.

At SAP, people get along with each other with genuine sincerity and honesty. When I first moved to Shanghai, I didn’t know anyone and worried about loneliness. Now I call my colleagues true friends and mentors whom I spend time with in and outside the office. They share my sorrows and joys and are true treasures in my life. Since joining SAP, my career has flourished, I’ve seen my potential grow and found a community of like-minded people passionate about making the world a better place. It’s been a wonderful journey and I am excited to see where it takes me.
