Mobilizing on-premises data and processes for anytime, anywhere access
BorsodChem Zrt., a member of the Wanhua Chemical Group, is a leading manufacturer of plastic raw materials and inorganic chemicals in Europe. Operating from its main production site in Kazincbarcika, Hungary, the company supplies materials used across industry sectors such as construction, automotive, furniture, and textiles, supporting a wide range of everyday applications. BorsodChem’s SAP office plays a key role in supporting its European operations, including subsidiaries in France and Italy and sales offices in the United Kingdom and Portugal.
The company was managing its HR and finance processes with SAP ERP Central Component (SAP ECC) and SAP S/4HANA, respectively, on two separate servers. BorsodChem aimed to make its on-premises data and processes more accessible by adopting a flexible, mobile-enabled solution—allowing employees to access relevant business information whenever and wherever they needed it.

Delivering integrated HR and finance data in one native mobile app
BorsodChem chose the SAP Mobile Start app to make its on-premises HR and finance content available in a single native mobile app. The decision was driven by several factors. First, the company did not have in-house mobile development capabilities, and the app provided a ready-to-use entry point. Compared to a mobile VPN, the mobile app offered more value by integrating two systems in one place. In addition, the decision built on the company’s existing use of SAP Build solutions, part of SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), and SAP Build Work Zone, on which SAP Mobile Start runs.
The company employs SAP Build Work Zone to combine business content from SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA with SAP Mobile Start. BorsodChem develops conceptual applications on premises with SAP Fiori apps and can now make this content available on mobile devices via SAP Mobile Start—achieving the main objective of the project. One self-developed app enables sales managers to create visit summaries on a tablet when seeing customers. Another app supports a “paperless” HR initiative by moving documents online, enabling employees to review, sign, or reject PDF contracts from their mobile devices. Employees can use SAP Mobile Start on their smartphones to engage in self-service HR activities.
BorsodChem implemented SAP Integration Suite, including APIs, to manage user synchronization on SAP BTP, opting for SAP Cloud Identity Services, rather than the Identity Provisioning service, to create and modify users. SAP Mobile Start can be accessed on various mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, desktops, Apple watches, and Apple Vision Pro. The application is currently used on both iOS and Android devices.

Empowering employees and managers with real-time insights for on-the-go decision-making
The biggest benefit for BorsodChem is having on-premises HR and finance data available in one place—anytime, anywhere. Employees can easily access SAP Mobile Start and use SAP solutions on their mobile devices with a standard Internet connection. The app can also be tailored to individual business needs. So far, around 500 users have registered, providing positive feedback.
Managers can log in at any time to access business-critical information from SAP S/4HANA, along with tasks and workflows. This helps them support their teams and make timely decisions wherever they are. For example, they can review and approve time entries and leave requests while keeping track of approvals, to-do lists, and organizational structures. Employees also have access to travel and expense information, benefits, bank details, pay slips, and personal data.
Overall, employees and managers at BorsodChem have benefited from more-efficient workflows and improved management of documents, time, and leave requests. Being able to complete daily tasks and stay connected with colleagues on the go has led to increased productivity, agility, and flexibility.

Adding more AI to the technology mix
As BorsodChem continues to explore SAP Mobile Start as part of SAP Build Work Zone, standard edition, it is considering several future enhancements. These include features such as news updates, business card visualization, and native notifications. The latter could be particularly valuable for reaching employees who may not work at a desk, such as plant workers, by proactively alerting them to required actions instead of relying on manual checks.
The company is also evaluating the adoption of the SAP Task Center service to further improve workflow management. In addition, it is considering the SAP Document AI solution, part of SAP Business AI, to replace its current optical character recognition solution. It has also begun exploring other SAP Build solutions to support automation, workflows, and development using the ABAP programming language, Java, and JavaScript.
Over the next five years, BorsodChem plans to further expand its use of SAP Business AI capabilities, including the Joule solution. Initial focus areas include SAP Build solutions, with potential extensions to SAP SuccessFactors solutions. The company is also exploring the document grounding capability to support the management of company regulations.
Depending on available resources and further insights into business value, BorsodChem is also considering extending SAP Mobile Start with solutions such as the SAP Concur mobile app and SAP SuccessFactors HCM. In parallel, the company is evaluating the SAP Datasphere solution to gain deeper insights from its data.
