Partner Marketing Senior Specialist

Cinda Amyx launched her career at SAP with big responsibilities – managing high-profile partnerships. She is now a member of the software partner marketing team, where she supports the SAP Endorsed Apps initiative.
However, not long ago, the possibility of landing such a position seemed frustratingly low, as Cinda had been out of the conventional workforce for several years while raising her two children.
“I went through the traditional job boards, and immediately found rejection. My resume was so unconventional and nonlinear, I automatically got screened out,” she said. “I knew I had something valuable to offer. But no one would give me the opportunity to actually speak to a hiring manager.”
Thinking that, surely others in her position had encountered the same roadblocks, Cinda searched online for answers. She eventually found the Path Forward program, which partners with companies like SAP to offer mid-career internships, or “returnships,” for professionals restarting their careers after time spent caregiving. Cinda began a returnship with SAP in November 2018.

Changing the Trajectory
When Cinda left the workforce to focus on starting a family with her husband in the early 2000s, the choice was a daunting one. She had worked for a large telecommunications company for four years and enjoyed the challenges of her role as a project manager. She also worked for a hot start-up implementing CRM applications in Silicon Valley.
“It was a tough decision, because I enjoyed the rigor of my client-facing role and I was climbing the corporate ladder,” she said. “There was a lot that I would have to sacrifice.”
Yet, the idea of taking her future children to daycare while juggling work just didn’t seem ideal. “I decided that I would focus on one thing – my family.”
Not long after her daughter was born, however, Cinda discovered that her newborn’s nap schedule allowed time to broaden her focus.
“I went back to school and got my MBA,” she said. “When I graduated, I was eight months pregnant with my second child, and with my toddler in tow, I got my diploma.” After completing her MBA program, Cinda was awarded a pre-doctorate fellowship working with an MIT professor in the Sloan School of Business.
“It was really fascinating – the type of work and the research that we did,” Cinda recalled. “I consulted for British Telecom and we designed a highly customized, personalized, digital experience for their end customer.”
Strategizing During Naptime
To pursue her PhD at MIT, Cinda and her husband, a venture partner and serial entrepreneur, and their two children moved from California to Boston in 2007. The family had a hard time finding its rhythm in the new city. “We went through five nannies in three months.”
As a result, Cinda decided to put school on hold.
Once again, as her children napped, the gears in Cinda’s mind continued to turn. “I thought, I can start a business. So, that’s exactly what I did. I started an asset management company working with brokerage companies and banks, helping them manage their real estate assets.”
Cinda ran her asset management company successfully for a year before shifting to concentrate on homeschooling, which she did for the next six years. During that time, the family traveled the world, accompanying her husband on business trips to Paris and Seoul, South Korea where they lived for months at a time. “I loved spending time with them,” Cinda said. “I loved the flexibility.”
That flexibility allowed Cinda to expand her skillset. She did pro bono marketing work for two startups. Additionally, she established an organic skincare business.
“In between homeschooling, when my kids were in enrichment classes, I had time on my hands,” Cinda said. “I started looking into making my own skincare products for my family, mainly because my daughter and my son both have allergic reactions to store-bought products.”
Cinda went back to school to learn about natural health and the science of formulating. “After a lot of research, I set up my small laboratory. I started making products and testing them on my family. They loved it.”
Cinda closed her skincare lab when her family moved to New York in 2016. It was at that time that she started thinking about going back to work. Her children were teenagers and the timing felt right.
Gaining Confidence, Pushing Forward
After completing her returnship, SAP hired Cinda full-time in January 2020. She is based out of the Hudson Yards office in New York City.
“Starting a new job, being in the corporate office, I felt like, okay, I think I got my mojo back. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and I’m proud to work for SAP, a company that values diversity from all aspects, including returning moms.”
