1. COMMITMENT TO IMPROVE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
Sustainability is an integral part of SAP’s purpose to help the world run better and improve people's lives and
crucial to our success. We strive to create positive environmental, economic, and social impact while respecting
planetary boundaries and human rights. We do this by embracing the dual role of being an exemplar and
enabler: we aim to lead by example in our own sustainable operations and provide solutions that enable our
customers to sustainably run their business and become intelligent, sustainable enterprises.
1.1 SAP’s Global Environmental Objectives
In support of our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SAP pursues the following
key environmental objectives to foster a low-carbon, circular future:

responsibility for ensuring that this Policy is implemented and for directing and supporting employees to
systematically integrate sustainability into business processes. All SAP employees shall strive to contribute to
sustainability in support of SAP’s objectives.

To foster sustainability and achieve our objectives, SAP defined six principles that guide all action:
2.1 Environmental Protection
We commit to protect our planet, prevent pollution, and manage our environmental impact to respect planetary
boundaries. In balance with the growth of our business and informed by the outcome of our double materiality
assessment (evaluation of environmental topics from both financial and impact perspectives), we continue to
implement practices to lower our emissions, reduce our resource use, restore ecosystems, and change
processes in aspiration for a world with minimal waste.
Climate Action
SAP pledges to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain emissions in line with a 1.5°C
pathway by 2030. This includes Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (market-based energy-related indirect
emissions), and all other business-relevant indirect (Scope 3) value chain emissions —ranging from upstream
emissions (coming from direct and indirect supplier activities) as well as our downstream emissions from
products in use. SAP shall continue to implement its climate action plan and strategic Net-Zero 2030 program,
build capacities, and collaborate with suppliers, customers, and other key stakeholders to drive, monitor, and
report target achievement.
On our way to achieving net-zero emissions and in line with our historical efforts to protect nature, SAP commits
to annually finance external climate projects that reduce and remove more CO2 than our own operations
(including scope 1, 2 and business travel emissions) cause in the respective year. This climate finance
contribution also supports SAP’s goal to help plant 25 million trees for the benefit of people, climate, and
biodiversity by 2030. It includes restoring more land than our offices and SAP data centers occupy and
regenerating the natural environment in which we operate.
Circular Economy
We strive to act according to the three principles of circularity: eliminating waste and pollution, keeping
products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. This means optimizing our waste performance
and promoting the sustainable reuse of resources. SAP is committed to operate free of single-use-plastics, and
we prioritize suppliers and partners that show a commitment to circularity.
2.2 Compliance
We commit to satisfy and comply with all applicable legal requirements and other obligations related to SAP’s
environmental and energy performance. This Policy is complemented by other policies, codes, and
commitments (see section 4).
2.3 Holistic Steering and Reporting
We commit to holistically steer our business and report our performance. This means connecting financial and
non-financial metrics to comprehensively analyze all dimensions of a company’s performance and working
toward their integration and harmonization. This approach includes the exchange of emission data along the
corporate value chain (i.e. suppliers to customers) via product carbon footprints, providing the foundation for
better balanced management decisions while positively impacting people and our planet. SAP reports its ESG
(environmental, social and corporate governance) and financial metrics within its SAP Integrated Report.
Moreover, executive board compensation is partly based on these metrics.
2.4 Employee Contribution
We commit to inspire sustainable change and enable employee contribution to our environmental goals
through global and local measures. To spark action and behavioural change, SAP will continue to raise
awareness for environmental challenges at work through dialogue platforms, events, volunteering, and more.
We foster transparency and sustainability engagement by providing monitoring tools and learning opportunities
that illustrate performance trends and how sustainability is engrained in SAP’s purpose, strategy, and business.
All employees are strongly encouraged to become active, act as role models and play their part in SAP’s
ongoing sustainability transformation.

society, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to foster a low-carbon, circular economy as well as
planetary health and resilience. We participate in discussions on environmental topics and raise public
awareness for climate change and planetary boundaries.
2.6 Continuous Improvement
We commit to continually improve our environmental performance and related management systems through
regular and targeted investments. The environmental impact of our operations and solutions is assessed,
monitored, managed, and reported using a life cycle perspective. We provide the necessary resources and
information to efficiently manage our environmental performance and achieve our objectives.
3. FOCUS AREAS
SAP defined four focus areas that have the highest impact on the environment and influence on SAP’s global
objectives. We address these focus areas by running environmental and energy management systems that are
certified according to ISO 14001 and 50001 respectively, implementing strategic cross-company programs,
driving innovation both, within our own operations as well as for our customers’ operations and implementing
processes that complement this Policy.
3.1 SAP Solutions
We commit to developing innovative solutions that help our customers embed sustainability into their business
strategies and operations and improve their environmental performance. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)-
centric, cloud-based, AI-enabled software shall support customers to increase transparency, improve energy
efficiency, address supply chain risks, and contribute to a healthy and safe environment. Specifically, SAP
solutions will allow (external and internal) customers to leverage granular, accurate, and auditable sustainability
data covering their entire value chain and enable holistic decision-making based on connected financial and
environmental data.
3.2 Data Center and Facility Operations
We commit to be a role model for sustainable operations of data centers, offices and facilities and to
continuously improve our energy, water and waste performance. Further, we will improve our carbon footprint
through proactive supply chain collaboration and targeted investments in efficiency projects and new
technology. We will continue to innovate and lead in sustainable design strategies within new infrastructure
projects with a focus on protecting the surrounding ecosystems and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Since 2013, all new SAP facilities worldwide shall meet highest requirements throughout their entire lifetime
according to state-of-the-art sustainability guidelines, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design).
We maintain our 100% renewable electricity commitment and strive to drive maximum impact with our strategic
purchasing decisions. We commit to increase energy efficiency in our operations as well as transforming our
portfolio of clean electricity sourcing options with the aim to reduce the purchase of unbundled Energy
Attribute Certificates (EACs) to a minimum; this means we aim at increasing the share of electricity obtained
through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), high-impact green tariffs, and onsite generated energy
where feasible, with a focus on additionality (making procurement decisions that lead to newly installed
renewable capacity).
3.3 Supply Chain
Procurement
We commit to integrate environmental performance considerations into sourcing, contracting, and supplier
management processes, and to prioritize procurement decisions that support low-carbon, energy-efficiency,
and circular solutions aligned with SAP’s goals, recognizing sustainability as an integral part to producing world-
class products. We continue to team up with our suppliers, contractors and partners to encourage their
commitment to low-carbon products and services and expect their contribution to SAP’s environmental
