For the 48 companies within the Tyrolit Group, we needed an efficient and transparent way to produce auditable sustainability figures for ESG and CSRD management reports. SAP Sustainability solutions are the ideal foundation for meeting these compliance and regulatory requirements.

Gearing up for evolving sustainability reporting laws

A leading provider of grinding and dressing tools and construction sector systems, Tyrolit Group has helped further the technological advancement of diverse industries for more than 100 years. Based in the heart of the Austrian Alps, Tyrolit combines family values with a global vision, exporting to more than 140 countries.

With these international operations, Tyrolit needed a reliable system for managing worldwide environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data to satisfy reporting standards including the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). However, the group struggled with scattered ESG reporting systems and the use of spreadsheets to integrate, validate, and share data across operations, along supply chains, and with business partners.

Tyrolit set out to implement a solution that would help it centralize this ESG data and align sustainability reporting with financial reporting standards. The company also sought analytics capabilities that would let it set benchmarks and targets and gain insights into areas such as raw material recycling and hazardous substance replacement. And it wanted better support for meeting changing customer expectations for ESG data and product carbon-footprint compliance.

Active sustainability is a key focus for all internal and external stakeholders. Given the many ESG regulations that continue to evolve, SAP Sustainability Control Tower and SAP Business AI play central roles in helping us maintain reporting, audit metrics, and optimize ESG data for short- and long-term value.

Assembling the right toolset for unified ESG processes

Tyrolit decided that using the SAP Sustainability Control Tower solution on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) would support comprehensive mapping and automation of its sustainability process, from data collection to system integration and reporting.

By connecting SAP Sustainability Control Tower with SAP Cloud ERP Private offerings and the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management solution, Tyrolit could automate data collection from SAP software and third-party sources and prepare the ESG report as part of the management report. Dashboards from both SAP Sustainability Control Tower and the SAP Analytics Cloud solution would help the company intuitively monitor ESG data, while planning features of the latter would let it measure sustainability goals. And replacing spreadsheets with input forms based on the SAP Fiori user experience would improve data management using KPIs enriched with productive data.

Together, these solutions would underpin the automation Tyrolit sought. For example, embedded generative AI—assisted reporting in SAP Sustainability Control Tower would help the group align reports with internal strategies and standards such as CSRD, while SAP Analytics Cloud would further enhance these reports. Workflows would automatically gather ESG data from multiple sources for streamlined reporting. A proof of concept using SAP Sustainability Footprint Management and SAP Business AI showed how the company could potentially automate emission-factor mapping using data from SAP Cloud ERP Private, reducing manual effort and improving accuracy. And SAP Business AI would also let Tyrolit automatically map business data to lifecycle assessment databases, providing a strong AI-driven foundation. These capabilities would facilitate accurate ESG reporting for governing bodies, banks, customers, and business partners.

The expertise, tools, and methodologies provided through the SAP MaxAttention program helped Tyrolit realize the full potential of these integrated SAP solutions. The company also used SAP Learning Hub, partner edition to enable IT users, provide them with hands-on practice, and keep them up to date with the latest SAP software innovations.

Taking concrete action based on improved transparency and insights

With this new IT architecture, more than 60 ESG managers and users at Tyrolit now benefit from streamlined ESG processes and automated reporting with detailed data collection. They can monitor more than 80 ESG metrics aligned to KPIs across finance, operations, and risk assessment, helping the group satisfy the European Sustainability Reporting Standards. Robust audit trails, workflows, and approvals facilitate ESG governance and compliance, while scenario analysis enhances sustainability initiatives, targets, and forecasting.

This standardized, integrated approach increases efficiency and underpins accurate and transparent sustainability reporting that helps drive forward sustainability management and uncover hidden opportunities for improvement. Tyrolit can proactively address evolving standards such as the CSRD and EU Taxonomy and develop solid action plans for relevant business areas.

For instance, better data management and automated reporting have helped the company reduce plastic packaging material use, increase recycling of packaging film, and switch to a thinner packaging-film alternative. The group headquarters has also cut its annual carbon emissions by optimizing processes and reducing gas consumption.

Across these different initiatives, the intuitive nature of the new solutions is key. For example, a user-friendly dashboard that aggregates and visualizes emissions data based on employees’ commuting behavior has already produced insights leading to emissions-savings measures.

Tyrolit has always regarded the synergy between people, technology, and innovation as a driver of sustainable value creation. Now, backed by SAP Sustainability solutions, it has laid the groundwork for fostering employee-driven innovation that helps make the world a place where future generations can thrive.
