In Switzerland, Emmi focuses on the development, production, and marketing of a full range of dairy and fresh products as well as the production, ageing, and trade of primarily Swiss cheeses. In the past two years, Emmi has partnered with SAP to undergo a digital transformation and Run Simple. Emmi’s challenge is creating seamlessness and consistency across their business systems. To achieve this objective, they had to upgrade their Swiss production facilities and get rid of the disparate legacy systems that were in place. Another challenge Emmi faces is pleasing the consumers who want transparency on labels more than anything else. Emmi needs to bring visibility into the manufacturing process to answer consumer’s questions, such as: what are they eating and where are these ingredients coming from? This kind of insight, however, will depend a lot on how well Emmi can process all the available data.

Emmi now has a greater ability to track and manage different milk deliveries based on their specific fat, protein, and lactose content. This helps the company determine which products the raw milk is best suited for – say, butter, mozzarella, or an Emmi yogurt drink. In addition to supporting greater efficiency, this level of traceability also dovetails nicely with fast-growing consumer demand and regulatory pressure to ensure greater transparency in our food supply.

Going forward, CEO Heinz Hodel says, “People are demanding more and more transparency in their food, and that includes dairy. In the near future, we could show consumers where their milk is coming – from which region, which farm, or even which cow.”

CEO Heinz Hodel notes that the larger dairy industry in Switzerland has yet to experience a full digital transformation, but imagines industry-specific business software is just the beginning. “In the next few years, the dairy industry will benefit from many of today’s emerging technologies,” Hodel predicts. “This could be robotics, 3D printing, IoT, and even drones.”
