Senior Product Owner, SAP Globalization Services
At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.
SAP really provides a harmonious environment for all employees. No matter what background you have, no matter where you are from, no matter where you live, people are all treated equally. SAP really respects an individual’s personality.
I came to Shanghai after graduation in 2011 and worked for a software company that is a subsidiary of a well-known banking group. At that time the SAP office stood alone with no subway, shopping mall or other office buildings close by. Now that has all changed and the office sits within the center of the technical park with so many facilities surrounding it.
Back then, SAP was one of the dream companies to work for and I felt that only highly-skilled people with lots of experience would get the chance to work there. 2014 was the first time I opened the SAP website to look for jobs. A week later I was being interviewed and I am still here! I started as a Java Developer, became an ABAP Developer, and then returned to Java.
So, what attracts me to SAP? Part of it was the mystery around it. A German company located alone. A company using a language called “ABAP” which no one had any experience of. A company where only experienced people had the chance to work.
A typical day for me in the office starts with a cup of water and checking my mailbox to make sure every inquiry can be answered in time. Then I check the backlogs in the To Do list and make a decision as to where to start. After the daily scrum I continue working until lunch. At lunch I like to walk around the small lake inside the software park. Then, in the afternoon I start with a coffee and spend time coding and attending various meetings. As a product owner, I also need to explain to the development team about requirements and answer their technical queries. Most importantly, as a product owner, I need to make sure what we deliver can meet customer requirements and make them happy. The success of SAP is an accumulation of every little success made by every one of the products. To achieve the success, everyone at SAP is playing a vital role.
Personal success to me means happiness, self-satisfaction and value recognition and I experience this a lot in my work. This includes figuring out a technical problem; winning a contest (demo jam, hackathon); a product going live; getting a thank-you from my colleagues and from customers; and the moment I got promoted and got recognition of my manager.
SAP really provides a harmonious environment for all employees. No matter what background you have, no matter where you are from, no matter where you live, people are all treated equally. SAP really respects an individual’s personality. If you are ambitious to achieve your definition of success, there is always opportunities that you can catch. If you are more focused on work-life balance, the workload would always be manageable most of the time. No matter which way you choose, there is no bias from others. This is also my favorite part of SAP - no politics - everyone is equal.
Outside of work I love to watch films. There are more than 250 films on my watched list! I also have a five-year-old daughter who keeps me very busy.
