Samuel Ifeanyi Ogbogbo

Principal Enterprise Architect, Customer Success

Samuel's Story

At SAP, we believe that when you bring everything you are, you can become everything you want.

SAP’s flexible work-life balance policy, global outlook and continuous innovation are just some of the reasons why I’ve endeared to remain here for close to a decade.

Sam Ogbogbo

I was born and bred in the metropolitan city of Lagos, Nigeria. My childhood was contrary to cliché. My dad was a director at the Central Bank of Nigeria and a workaholic, which afforded us an upper middle-class upbringing and a pampered life with my mum holding the fort at home full-time. I still have positive memories of my childhood; being a rascally truant and acting stoically incorrigible around my peers. Playing football barefoot at playgrounds or cricket without a proper wicket after school, while mimicking the then sports stars of that time was stuff of my youth.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), I commenced mandatory national service with the Nigerian National Youth Service Corp, which lasted a year. Thereafter, in search of the proverbial golden fleece, I decided to further my education overseas at the Computer Science Department of the University of Hamburg, Germany. I had to learn German, and although I am fluent now I still find myself learning it decades later. My sojourn culminated years later with a Master’s Degree in Computing Mathematics at Cardiff University in Wales, United Kingdom.

My professional career saw me working at a plethora of top financial and consulting institutions, and after several years growing my expertise, I decided to set up my own private outfit as a freelance IT consultant. My work as a contractor was exciting and lucrative. I was working with corporations in London on complex projects and living in a cosmopolitan city that offered everything I dreamed of. Then the 2008 financial crisis happened, and I saw the writing on the wall. That was when SAP came calling. Here was a big blue-chip company looking for a mainframe expert, who could speak fluent German and English. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

My first eight years at SAP were pure magic. I was as a database expert in Customer Success. My role involved delivery and expert services for customers globally. I flew to all corners of the world, from Mexico to South Africa. I was deployed for critical customer situations and I ran on adrenaline. It was a real rush. The biggest gratification came from a customer’s recognition of a job well done. Since then I’ve moved into roles in Cloud and currently as a Solution Principal Architect, which marries a diverse area of projects from cloud to database work.

SAP’s flexible work-life balance policy, global outlook and continuous innovation are just some of the reasons why I’ve endeared to remain here for close to a decade. My colleagues are all talented, brilliant specialists, and experts in their field. The atmosphere is highly academic and innovative, which appeals to my love of study. The company’s evolution from a traditional ERP provider to a global cloud services leader is proof that we are always on the frontline of innovation. The possibilities here are endless.

SAP can offer you a lot in a career– stability, diversity, international experience, to start. You have the flexibility to switch geographies, departments and areas of specialization. Once you get into SAP, you will never be bored. It’s fantastic. I have never once regretted my choice of leaving a freelance life to become a permanent employee. SAP turned out truly as it claimed: a unique hub of very talented and creative minds constantly at the brim of innovation.
