Piotr's story

At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.

I do like changes and new challenges. This can sound hypocritical considering the fact I am in the same company for more than 10 years. But you don't have to change a company for that. The work culture and global scale of SAP give me enough opportunities to enjoy my work and keep a proper work-life balance.

Piotr Bochyński

Piotr Bochyński has been with SAP for 10 years and is now a Chief Product Expert at SAP Labs Poland in Gliwice.

My first job when I was a teenager was in a garden construction company. My first task was to move a huge pile of soil, gravel, and stones from one place to another with a shovel and wheelbarrow. It took me 4 days what a digger could do in about 1 hour. But I was cheaper. After one week I decided to focus on my studies and never work as a gardener again. This led me to software development.

I began my professional career as a junior programmer more than 20 years ago. From this junior role I moved through roles such as team leader, architect, and product owner before managing a software development unit of over 100 people. It was at this point I realized I did not want to manage people - I wanted to develop my technical skills and be more involved in the product and the code. That decision led me to the Hybris office in Gliwice - a small team (40 people) working in a start-up fashion. I was hired as an architect and was given the opportunity to work with new technologies in greenfield development. I moved from the old heavy on-premises Java Enterprise world to a new cloud-based, lightweight microservices and NoSQL storage. Two years, later SAP acquired Hybris.

I wasn’t very excited about the acquisition at first. It is very hard to move from a start-up to a large corporate enterprise. However, at the time I was a young father and had no time to think about changing jobs. I just gave it a try.

It turned out that with a big company you can have security and stability whilst having fun at work and developing yourself. And SAP is investing into innovation. We used this chance and we continued our cloud projects with SAP’s support. So, my adventure with new technologies and innovations even accelerated. With my colleagues, I built the platform for commerce microservice based on Cloud Foundry (YaaS). Building a modern Platform as a Service solution with DevOps culture and the principle "you build it you run it" was a mind shift experience. Soon after a new opportunity happened - a project for developing applications and system integrations on top of Kubernetes. After some experiments and first concepts, we managed to convince our management that it makes sense to do it as an open-source project. This is how we started the Kyma.

I do like changes and new challenges. This can sound hypocritical considering the fact I am in the same company for more than 10 years. But you don't have to change a company for that. The work culture and global scale of SAP give me enough opportunities to enjoy my work and keep a proper work-life balance.

I think I am lucky because I work with the people I like. And it is not only a team working in the local office. For all these years I met so many wonderful people from all around the world (most of them face to face before pandemic times). I just feel good at work.
