Almost 80 million disposable umbrellas are left at railroad stations each year, and there is a need to solve the problem of abandoned and discarded umbrellas. This SUMI-KASA project will spread the culture of sharing through umbrellas, making each person aware of the responsibility of using umbrellas and contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by reducing the amount of waste. As a model system, the project will be expanded from Sumida-ku to the rest of Japan. The SUMI-KASA project proof of concept (POC) was developed with SAP Build Apps, which prototyped a smartphone application which was adopted as a Smart Tokyo Promotion Project and received three-year external funding.
