Corvias: Supporting Diverse Infrastructure Needs of Communities

Corvias manages federal government contracts across the United States involving
infrastructure projects in partnership with the military, higher education institutions, and
communities. It provides financing, construction, and energy (solar) solutions.
Each business unit and project made independent decisions about technology and
workflows. There were five purchasing tools and three accounting systems. The
organization’s shared services in HR, IT, risk management, accounting, and finance
struggled to connect the complex landscape. There was no inventory tracking, and
reporting was done manually. Corvias wanted to simplify its IT architecture with a
scalable, flexible, and future-ready solution. It also wished to reimagine back-office
workflows to help drive efficiency in combination with technology.

“With SAP BTP, we have visibility into the full cost
stack across allocations, vendors, and the
general ledger. When we're making decisions and
trying to understand where we want to spend money,
we know how much are fixed costs versus primarily
direct or segment costs.”
David Screnar, Chief Financial Officer, Corvias
Before: Challenges and Opportunities
• Complex organizational structure with disconnected systems for accounting and purchasing and a
manual cost allocation process prone to human error
• Desire to simplify workflows and get information to the right people for better decision-making
• Need to create an integrated system to move data between processes without human interaction and
improve efficiency
Why SAP and Avvale
• Private edition of SAP S/4HANA® Cloud and SAP® Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to unify
data in one place, enabling integrated purchasing and accounting
• SAP Fiori® apps to enable the development of customized applications for allocating segment costs
• Avvale for expert guidance and support with software selection and solution implementation
After: Value-Driven Results
• Provided actionable information to decision-makers and automated cost allocation, allowing business
units to see real costs and profitability individually and at the project level
• Freed up staff to focus on improving working capital through continual improvements
• Reduced touch points for the accounts payable team from seven to two in 75% of cases, with
automated purchase order management
• Harmonized data security roles organization-wide and lessened administrative work for site teams
• Delivered a flexible and scalable platform, allowing smooth and swift assimilation of acquired or new
companies, such as the solar business that emerged from a project-based model

“With SAP BTP, setting up our solar business
was very straightforward. As we grow, having
flexibility where the platform grows with us
is a huge advantage. Our main goal is process
simplification, and we feel we’re achieving this.”
David Screnar, Chief Financial Officer, Corvias
Corvias oversees projects for the military, higher education institutions, and state and local
government in the United States. Each business unit had its own accounting and
purchasing systems, resulting in a complex IT landscape. As it grew, the company wanted
greater simplicity, efficiency, and scalability by streamlining processes.
Corvias chose the private edition of SAP S/4HANA® Cloud and SAP® Business
Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to centralize data. This has enabled automated and
integrated purchasing and accounting capabilities. The group is also using SAP Fiori®
apps to develop customized applications for allocating costs across segments. Avvale
guided Corvias through the software selection task and supported the implementation.
Automated cost allocation means master-integration-table changes translate to business-
unit and project levels for visible insights and improved decision-making. In purchase
order management, the accounts payable team has reduced manual processes. This
allows the team to redirect efforts to higher-value work, such as researching vendor
pricing to boost savings. Corvias harmonized data security roles organization-wide. And
SAP BTP enables new or acquired companies to integrate smoothly and swiftly.
