Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning

Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. Consequently, to create sustainable futures, there must be educated workers who can support government agencies, private-sector businesses, and other organizations that fuel economic growth. To build an educated workforce, children must be provided the opportunity to learn. Massive open online courses can provide learning that is as immersive and detailed as any classroom experience to thousands of children who previously had little or no schooling. With COVID-19 exacerbating the inequalities of the world, more children will be left behind if we do not act now.

If current trends continue, by 2030, more than 50% of youth will not have the skills to succeed in the world, and 825 million young people will not have acquired basic, secondary-level skills. The International Labour Organization estimates that 73% of young people have experienced school closures as a result of the current global pandemic. Such exclusion is both unjust and unsustainable. Governments need to create the right conditions, but corporations are in a unique position to contribute – especially companies like SAP.

SAP’s global partnership with UNICEF in support of Generation Unlimited, a public-private collaboration, turned one year old in 2020. Its course content and communication modules on life skills and social innovation were digitized in India, and an online state career guidance portal is active and operationalized with the help of SAP India volunteers.

Learning for Life

SAP’s education and workforce readiness portfolio – Learning for Life – is developed through long-term multi-stakeholder partnerships. It leverages SAP’s technology, talent, and ecosystem to effect systemic change in education and workforce readiness, powering opportunity for all people through digital inclusion. Our goal is to help all people attain relevant 21st-century skills to secure decent and meaningful work, including entrepreneurial pursuits, in a digital world.

For example:

  • The openSAP platform offers 250 massive open online courses and has trained more than 1.1 million individuals from over 200 countries since 2013. In 2021, the platform celebrated 5 million course enrollments. openSAP is available to anyone in the world interested in learning about the latest technology trends. Courses are offered completely free of charge, and all that anyone needs to sign up is a valid e-mail address.
  • SAP has committed the success of its Learning for Life portfolio to support the Global Alliance for YOUth. Launched at the World Economic Forum, this alliance is a cohort of 20 international brands and aims to impact six million youth by 2022, helping them build employability skills.

SAP Powers Opportunity

A focus on inclusive, adaptive lifelong learning spurs future innovation, creates a sustainable future, and fuels economic prosperity. SAP Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs work to this end for underserved or marginalized people.

SAP is committed to inclusive, quality education, and strives to include all people in the digital economy. In 2020, together, we have engaged 2.3 million youth and trained 117 thousand teachers, spanning 113 countries.

  • SAP’s signature coding initiative in Europe, Meet and Code, went virtual in 2020, and hosted the kickoff online with more than 8,000 attendees. Meet and Code welcomed 10 new participating countries and proudly supported 679 nonprofit organizations, enabling them to 39,604 young learners across urban and remote locations.
  • Africa’s largest digital skills program, our Africa Code Week, innovated with purpose, growing to reach 21,000 teachers and 1.5 million youth across 44 countries. A smartphone application was launched to facilitate online learning and a coding competition, AfriCAN Code, themed, ‘How will your tech change the future of education’, engaged 40 countries.
  • Early College High Schools, a digital literacy program for high school students in New York, Bay Area, Vancouver, and Boston, providing IT workforce development for low-income students in North America, helped colleges continue their project-based learning model for over 1,100 students in 2020, while many students received credits in IT-related courses. BTECH (New York, USA) had an exceptional 99% graduation rate.
  • Digital Skills for Today shapes young people in conflict zones to be employable and future-ready with coding training and workforce-readiness skills. Spanning 14 countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, Digital Skills for Today strives to attain peace through education and employment.
  • In India, Code Unnati teaches thousands of youths across states how to be proficient in next-generation skills and be workforce-ready. In 2020, in partnership with nonprofit organizations, a Code Unnati mobile application has been launched to ensure that learning does not stop amidst crises. The application offers lifelong learning for all.
  • SAP’s Social Sabbatical initiative encompasses a portfolio of pro bono volunteering programs, where highly diverse teams of SAP employees solve strategic challenges of nonprofits and social enterprises, focused on bridging the digital divide. Starting with the flagship program in 2012, SAP has partnered with PYXERA Global to expand this initiative rapidly.
  • In lights of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of students were no longer able to attend school or university. To prevent education from taking a backseat in this already challenging time, SAP launched a digital learning initiative to offer innovative and interactive educational content for students, professionals, and anyone wishing to continue to educate themselves.
