I think we often see one model in our head of what it looks like to be a leader. And that model has been very much shaped by what a traditional man in leadership looks like. And girls experience this, too. When we think about what leadership looks like, we often think it’s the person speaking at the front of the room, the person leading the pack, the person telling other people what to do. Not everyone needs to be that one kind of stereotypical leader in order to contribute as a leader and be the best version of a leader that they could be themselves.

For us, the first order of business was to create a mission and a vision that could inspire people, that could resonate with anyone. The second thing was a set of values that support that vision and mission, and very importantly, you need to be willing to act on those values. For example, we pulled out of North Carolina when the state passed a bill that allowed for the potential discrimination of people for their sexual identity or sexual orientation, which was anathema to our values.
exactly the same as men and have the same legal rights. Conversely, there are many other countries where you cannot open a bank account without your husband. In Saudi Arabia, you cannot travel unless your husband says you can. Women are also an economic force. If you think of India and their enormous rate of violence against women. Just think of what India would be if women had the same access as men to work and to a free life — it would be extraordinary. With 1.3 billion people living in India, it would be 10 times bigger than China. Women’s rights are crucial for the economy and developing countries.

We think our progress on diversity inclusion, first and foremost, comes from the fact that our mission is one that is inclusive at its very heart. Democratizing financial services means that every citizen should have the opportunity to be part of the digital economy. When your whole mission is around inclusion and your primary value is being a company that represents the diversity of the world, then making strides to represent that internally is incredibly important. Otherwise, there's a real inconsistency between what we do and what we say we want to do in serving the world's underserved population. We believe that the more diverse we are, the better we can understand the diverse population that we're serving in the world.
the problem. So, it's not about, "What product are we going to develop that consumers are going to go buy." Eventually you get to that, but it really starts from an engineering standpoint, which is about solving a problem. I think what we've done at Hint is a result of growing up in the tech industry and then deciding to solve a problem by creating a product.
I come from a society where we have labels for women and how they must be. I think the first rule is, you have to be good looking and the second is, you have to get married. Even though it’s not taught, it’s in your head that this is what society expects you to be. A lot of societies have these kinds of rules or labels, and I think it’s important for women to make their own statements, labels, or messages that young women can follow. I remember not going to college a few days because I had an inferiority complex. I could not accept that someone could have such a terrible body, such an imperfect body. And I failed to realize that I was so much more than an imperfect body. So that was the first rule to break. You don’t need a perfect body. You don’t need a perfect face.

Business needs to be ethical and give back to society. Business has so much potential to change the world just through making things more ethical and less corrupted. Everything we do at the foundation is always with business in mind because we know it’s so important. I think acceptance is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. My life became meaningful the moment I started accepting my disability. For five to seven years after the accident, I was fighting it, trying hard to be a normal person, and I put so much pressure on trying to be just like everyone that I failed to understand what I was actually good at. I was just trying to follow the crowd. The moment I started accepting my disability, I have been able to go public about my life and my challenges and what I’m good at, and I think only then did I start becoming a better version of myself.

I was always willing to just sort of allow my journey to happen. I started out in the magazine industry and thought I was going to be a writer but that didn't happen. Then I went into circulation, which, looking back, really helped me with e-commerce and understanding how to grow our business in general. So, I would say in terms of defining moments, there have been a lot along the way, but it's been more about not necessarily being dead set doing one thing. Instead it’s been about going for something and being open to where the path is going to take me. I think that flexibility has helped me to define exactly who I am as a leader and also who I am as a parent, and in many ways who I am as a woman. The reason why I can be chill to some extent is being able to allow things to happen that are going to happen.

If you've interacted with a girl in elementary school, you might have met someone who was very spunky and very herself. But then they go through middle school and this change happens; they stop raising their hands, they get a little bit quieter. Research shows that, during this time, girls are discovering a lot of new pressure to be perfect. Pressure to attract boys. Pressure to do really well in school. Pressure to be athletic. Pressure to be popular. Pressure to be beautiful. All of this pressure starts to dampen the uniqueness of these girls and their confidence. To give girls their voice back, we show them that we value their uniqueness and superpowers no matter what they are. We tell them that they really can have an impact on the world and encourage them to speak up. We've got a lot of problems to solve in the coming decades and I really believe that we need these girls and their voices in order to make a difference.

We encourage young girls to talk about and make an impact on some pretty serious issues. We see girls pick local issues like natural disaster relief or racial discrimination in schools. But there’s a select few that show up in every community. Depression and mental health are definitely some of the most common causes that girls choose. In fact, you'd be surprised and a little heartbroken to hear how many of these middle schoolers know someone struggling with suicidal thoughts. They see those close to them struggling and want to do something about it.

The fantastic thing I think we have is that we address one issue by all angles. Shed light. Bring lawyers in. Give awards. Etcetera. Take modern slavery, for example. We cover the issue through journalism. We train journalists around the world on how to cover the issue without being jailed or killed. We also help all of the NGOs on the front line through our Trust Law program. We have more than 110 NGOs that deal with modern slavery and are members of Trust Law where we are able to give them lawyers, help them do their advocacy, and work better. When a good lawyer is able to help them push for the change of law in their country, it can have a big impact.

I recently met a number of women who were graduates of the Kellogg School of Management, had great careers, and are now going out and investing. They're not investing by joining a private equity firm. They're partnering with other women they know and admire, investing in ideas and companies they think are great, many of which are run by women. At the heart of NAF is to make sure that we're making the connection between what students are learning in high school and what it can look like in the working world. When students can see the road ahead clearly, they're much more likely to get onto that road and that path towards success. Through career awareness, exploration, and preparation activities, students really do get this clear vision of what it takes to be successful in the career of their choosing. Oftentimes, we have students in communities where high school graduation is not a given. It isn’t even expected, but these students are on a path where the vision is clear. They see why it makes sense to drive towards graduation. They see why it makes sense to continue their education. They see that the payoff is gonna be so much greater than what a lot of their peers often do — which is to drop out and get a low-wage job that puts money in their pocket immediately.

So not only do caregivers need to worry about the skills they’ve lost or need to gain, but they also need to combat the biased assumptions people have of about them and their commitment to work. That’s why it’s so important for businesses to think about bias. They need to make sure that they’re not losing out on incredibly skilled and experienced workers because of a frankly old-fashioned notion that caregivers are less committed to the business.

I’m very positive about the future. As long as we work together, collaborate, and co-create, we can address the key issues facing education and make a massive difference for all of our futures. One thing that I’m particularly excited about is around blockchain for social good. At the moment, we’ve got 1.7 billion people in the world that are either unbanked or underbanked. We’ve got 5x more smartphones than we have people with bank accounts. They’re quite startling statistics. But we can utilize technology like blockchain and the underlying infrastructure to give people identity and access to things they’ve never had before. In a recent survey we took of our graduating seniors, 87% of our GlamourGals volunteers shared that volunteering shaped their future goals and career aspirations. Our volunteers don’t just provide makeovers for seniors, but they create their own chapters, recruit more volunteers, organize visits, and more. They’re true leaders that are constantly faced with split-second decisions that affect their peers or the seniors they’re serving at a home. That type of on-your-feet thinking and decision-making will serve them well in their professional careers, in addition to the stories and real experiences they’re gathering. Plus, those volunteer stories provide incredible material for scholarship essays, college applications, recommendation letters, or awards, which hundreds of volunteers in our program have already received from us. Not only does volunteering help breed leadership skills, but there is also an immediate academic and social opportunity for them.

Volunteers from companies came in and helped students start a business and go through the whole step of creating a product and selling it. It was that exposure to people in the business community that helped steer me towards my career in business and an accounting degree. But a lot of students don't have the opportunity to interact with people from different industries and corporations. I hope more businesses could create the space for their employees to volunteer in the community, especially if they can do it in a way that helps students understand what kinds of career choices there are out there.
We believe business should respect human and workplace rights, reduce their negative impact to the environment, and build sustainable communities through responsible sourcing.

There's an opportunity through programs like ours for companies to walk the walk and provide professional development in the context of reintegrating folks into the workforce. We've been really happy to work with so many amazing corporate partners who do that. And it doesn't always have to be what we think of as corporate training where everybody gets into a room and there’s an instructor. Formal schooling is just one method, but extending education into the workplace can also be done by making your managers available for mentoring and offering training in a more ad hoc and informal way.

I think if I had to give one word or skill that volunteers are learning from GlamourGals that would make them incredible leaders in the future is empathy. Now more than ever, being an empathetic leader is so important and I feel like GlamourGals volunteers are demonstrating that in different ways and it makes them that much more incredible.
the skills they learn. These companies are then able to welcome much more prepared talent in the future, helping bridge the skills gap. It is a business investment in their future, their talent pipeline, and their workforce development.

demographic and really inspire them, we realized that we needed to show them STEM-related opportunities. Bringing relevant, inspiring STEM role models (especially women) directly to our volunteers enabled us to show them that they can be that woman up there. They can follow that same path to success. Also, the more we can expose teenagers to STEM leaders that have similar origins, the better. For example, we invite GlamourGals alumni that are in STEM to come and speak at our annual GLTI conference. It brings it full circle for our volunteers. A 15-year-old girl sitting in the audience can see a fellow GlamourGals member in STEM and say “I can be her” and really believe it.

We need to make sure that the classroom keeps pace with the changes that we see in the digital economy and the way that the world is changing. But as the world changes and there's more opportunity for students to learn differently and to have access to different opportunities, we need to be careful to avoid creating a situation where technology is the enabler. Technology creates a greater divide between the students who are able to access it and the students who can’t. Here at NAF, we believe very strongly in making sure that the students who need access to technology the most get it. As technology becomes the disruptor to so many different things, including education, it is really important that we don't leave the greatest group of students who need it the most behind.

At the Boone Family Foundation, one of our focus areas is children in public schools. As we started to learn more and more about what was happening in public education, we learned that 75% of children in the U.S. are not at the reading level in the third grade. We also understand that kids learn to read, and then in third grade, there's this big flip where students read to learn. So, if they don't learn to read by third grade, they're gonna just keep falling behind and behind. And I think that's what we're seeing with the high school graduation rates in the last few years. That’s why so many are either not making it through high school or not making it through any higher education. It sets them up for limited opportunities and it's all because they don't learn to read when they're young.

Both women and men who try to restart their careers after time away face a lot of bias, especially if they left work to provide care for loved ones. In fact, research has found that caregivers experience bias that is above and beyond the bias that is held for people who left the workforce for an unspecified reason.
I vehemently believe that STEAM is critical. It’s not valuing one discipline above the other, it’s putting them all on an equal footing. Arts is a critical piece. We need to have creative confidence and creative imagination. Education is all about opening up opportunities and I think technology can play a pivotal role in making that happen. Everybody has different styles of learning. In more traditional education, it can be a bit prescriptive, linear, and very text-based. We have real opportunities now to do things differently. With VR and AR, we can create immersive learning experiences. We can go back in time and feel like we’re in a historical moment. Or we can learn anatomy while being inside the human body. It’s a completely different way of doing things. It applies to different senses in our minds and bodies, and that opens up more learning opportunities for more people.

Well. There were two moments for me. The first one is when I learned the scale of modern-day slavery and child labor, which is over 40 million people and over 100 million children. When I first learned that, I just couldn’t believe more people weren’t talking about it and that really became my first mission: to get people to talk about it. The second moment was when I started doing my own field research and started programs around the world. I would go meet the kids that are out on the boats or the little girls that had to go into the mines. Seeing these raw materials make their way into products we use and love every day drove me to take action.

On how companies can ensure their CSR initiatives aren’t seen as just a PR stunt…
Business for Social Responsibility
I really believe that in order to solve human trafficking, go upstream, and solve its constituent problems, that we need businesses to get involved. Business is driving the negative side of enslaving people, but also the solutions. This issue is so embedded in our supply chains, whether we're in food, agriculture, apparel, technology, or the service industries, that people's freedom is being taken away from them and they're being forced to work. If the deep problems lie with the practice of business, I’ve found that the solutions also lie with the practice of business.

Part of running a good business is being aware of challenges and getting ahead of them. And you can’t fix what you can’t measure. So, the first step businesses can take is to measure their challenges. For example, measure your spend data, what you’re buying, and the risks associated with them like health, safety, forced labor, or water usage and prioritize those challenges. Not every company can fix every problem, but some are specifically designed and have certain amounts of purchasing power in the world to actually make some real shifts in the way challenges are and not all of them are going to be the same. And that’s part of the reason why transparency in supply chains is so powerful — different companies of different sizes that have different focuses can have a different impact.

I’m seeing something today that I didn’t see 10 years ago. I’m seeing a lot of statements, sentences, and laws with the words “slavery” and “supply chain” together. We weren’t talking about that 10 years ago. Popes and presidents weren’t talking about that 10 years ago, but they do now. When you look at who’s talking about it, what they’re talking about, and the ways large companies like SAP are getting involved, there’s a lot to be hopeful for.

On the supply chain recommendations that might surprise today’s CPOs and procurement leaders …
On the importance of analytics in mitigating risks in the supply chain …
And not only are the risks changing, but the focus that the investor community, consumers, business partners, and governments are putting on these risks is rising. You have to be careful not to put a solution in place and just leave it. You have to consistently review what you’ve done, look at the data, make sure that it’s still the appropriate response to whatever risk you’re facing. This differs from traditional procurement workflows as risk is much more dynamic.
We need to have transparency in our supply chains as a forethought, not as an afterthought. I think some people are still using their sustainability reporting to look back on what they did last year, and how well they met a certain set of criteria that they’re being rated and ranked on. I think that’s good, it’s progress, but what would be more important would be for us to get in front of these risks and explain to the world what our strategy is for combatting them and exactly what it is that we plan to do down the line. The sustainability reporting becomes a double-check on those metrics that we set out. That would be a big shift that we’re all trying to see — going from backwards-looking to forward-looking.

The Paris Agreement in 2015 was, frankly, the most inspiring single day I have experienced in my time working on sustainability (over 22 years), setting the world on the path towards net zero carbon emissions at or not too long after the middle of this century. In today’s world, there’s so much information that everyone has an opinion about what a company is doing, and that’s entirely appropriate. The first lesson is to not let the message get too far out ahead of performance. There are lots of examples out there where companies may have claimed credit for doing things they haven’t exactly done. And in today’s hyper-transparent world, that just simply doesn’t work. So, you have to make that message and action are really aligned.

I think what continues to be a bit of a revelation for some today is that sustainability can be the biggest driver of innovation that any company can find. Whether it's innovation related to addressing climate change or it’s looking to the rising megacities in the Global South as powerful engines of innovation for new products and services. I think that understanding sustainability can perhaps be the thing that enables companies to stay ahead of change at a time when change is coming at us very, very rapidly.
Imagine a world where everyone – regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status – is fulfilled with decent, meaningful work. By putting people at the heart of digital transformation, we can unleash human potential like never before. With the right skills, and inclusive business practices, we will thrive and innovate like never before. We will become more intelligent and relevant. We will grow our self-worth to new heights. By increasing access to quality education, the following individuals are giving people the opportunity to lead a better future.

The second thing I would suggest companies do is to let your partners tell the story for you. If you’re working with industry partners to change an industry supply chain, lots of different companies tell the story. If you’re working with local stakeholders to help ensure environmental improvements or women’s empowerment or respect for human rights, let the partner tell the story for you because that tends to have greater authenticity with a lot of people in the audience.

When we first started out, we couldn’t get law enforcement to pursue the majority of the evidence that we had discovered. We had to go undercover. I had to wear a hidden camera. Today, there’s more awareness and understanding. In the past, it was also hard to go to large global retail brands and convince them to change their supply chain. It was unthinkable. Now, however, I really feel like it’s on their radar. There are tools like SAP Ariba that build more transparency and traceability for supply chains, making it easier for companies to monitor their impact and find new ways of sourcing. I'm seeing companies and individuals make really intelligent and heroic decisions. And, for me, that's inspiring and gives me hope for the future.

message to the marketplace. This change in perspective distinguishes and differentiates brands from other companies who aren’t innovating their supply chain. If supply chains are only seen in the vacuum or context of cost per unit, it’s very difficult for a visionary supply chain manager to suggest an increase of maybe a few cents per unit in order to do it better and with more dignity for citizens of the world.

As important as responsible sourcing is to us as companies, and to our local and global communities, we don’t have unlimited resources to dedicate to monitoring our supply chains for risks. Monitoring risk can be really complex, but here at Maplecroft, we try to make it easy. That’s where analytics come into play. With quality analytics, we can effectively hygrate our operations and our suppliers’ operations for risks and focus that limited spend that they have on the areas that need the most attention. We use analytics not only to identify the risks today, but also to try and anticipate where the risks will be in the future. We are focused on the dynamic nature of that risk — where is it, where is it moving to, and who is impacted by it.

While most people assume that matching donor blood to aid recipients is a rather straightforward process of linking blood types, there are other factors that create challenges for the supply chain and distribution management of heavily in-demand donations. For instance, there are actually 3 components of donated blood: plasma, palettes, and red blood cells. People with certain blood types need more of certain components when receiving transfusions. Ethnicity and genetic factors can play a role in recipient compatibility too. In addition, getting that blood where it needs to go has logistical hurdles -- care practitioners are often working off 30-day old information as to the supply and needs in their area. OneBlood, the second largest blood bank in the United States, is working to make the collection process more streamlined and efficient so that hospitals get the exact kind of blood they need when they need it the most. An industry process known as automation and a state-of-the art mobile app helps them to capture the most needed parts of a donation and allows donors to give more frequently -- every 7 days in fact. Then, armed with more of these precise collections, OneBlood uses SAP HANA/Cloud for data warehousing, as well as SAP Business Objects with next-level precision analytics to supply hospitals with multi-day inventories that match their current and near-term needs. This means OneBlood can source blood from their centers all across the country and be extraordinarily successful in saving lives, especially when there is an extreme event that creates a sudden demand for blood or a rare circumstance that requires very specific needs. For example, donors and clinicians were able to save survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting with the help of OneBlood’s infrastructure. In another case, one child aided by OneBlood required 1600 bags of a unique blood type to live. Plus, the application ensures there is less waste from minimizing blood that was inappropriate or unnecessarily audited. By partnering with SAP, OneBlood more effectively serves emergency responders, hospitals, communities, and those who need transfusions. OneBood is working with hospitals to manage their own supply systems to make the process even more optimal. This application shows that the same tools that allow businesses everywhere to go to market quickly and scale are often used in powerful ways that we sometimes take for granted. Visit OneBlood.org to learn where you can donate blood today.

According to the UN, the world’s population will reach 9.8 billion by 2050 and food production will have to increase by 70% to keep up with that increased demand. This need for more food comes at the same time that climate change threatens to hinder crop development and radically change the global food supply chain. With places like Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East being particularly vulnerable to both challenges, it is imperative that farmers prepare, adapt, and find innovative solutions now. Waterwatch Cooperative is offering one such innovation to these at-risk areas by using technology to improve farm yields while using resources more efficiently -- thereby providing farmers, who deal with very variable and low profit margins, with a higher, more stable income and creating a more sustainable supply chain. The agricultural world is less digitized than other industries -- especially in these developing areas. Many farmers rely on traditional indexes and old rules of thumb to tend their yields. By providing over 570 million farmers with a platform that helps them make well-informed decisions, Waterwatch can prevent a farmer from having a devastating loss year by saving crops and producing more per acre. For example, wineries in South Africa were able to maintain grape outputs while lowering water usage by 25%. How does it work? Using satellite data, Waterwatch’s application has built a quantitative database that acts as a GPS of sorts for crops. Farmland is split into 100x100 meter blocks. An algorithm for each crop in conjunction with machine learning incorporates real time changes in the environment such as rain, temperature, humidity, etc. and offers farmers analysis on how to best adapt. Waterwatch is working to narrow its geodata to 10x10 meter blocks and expand it to Asia Pacific and Latin America, as well as incorporate even more data from the farmers themselves. Its ultimate goal is to process global yield data in real time and allow everyone in the value chain to make a profit from its cooperative ecosystem. Since Waterwatch already offers 1.2 Pedabytes of data for free (while offering even more for those on a tiered payment plan), it requires an infrastructure that can nimbly handle massive amounts of information. The agile SAP HANA/Cloud Platform and SAP Machine Learning accomplishes this feat. In addition, SAP’s global reach and ability to communicate with customers ensures farmers they are getting the same reliable enterprise analytics offered to the biggest businesses in the world. This trust is essential to Waterwatch and its users as SAP ensures privacy rights and GRDP-compliance while unlocking valuable information and insights to millions. The UN has recognized Waterwatch as a scalable solution. Indeed, the application addresses multiple Sustainable Development Goals: it alleviates poverty by reducing farmers’ economic loss, increases the sustainability of communities and responsible consumption of resources, and mitigates climate change risk. Above all, it leads the world in a direction to Zero Hunger. When bold ideas are unlocked through cutting edge technology through partnerships like Waterwatch and SAP, lives can truly be improved on a global scale.

The recent celebrity deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain have underscored the distressing statistic that suicide rates have dramatically increased in the United States in the last two decades. One under reported aspect of the crisis, however, is that many of those suicides happen in America’s jails and prisons. In 2013, 32% of jail deaths and 6% of prison deaths -- over 6,700 lives lost -- were due to suicide. With the Bureau of Justice statistics estimating that over half of all inmates in prisons and jails have mental health issues, it’s clear that overhauling the treatment of those within the justice system will be essential in not only getting people the help they need, but addressing suicide risks. After a mental health event, many patients end up in a temporary psychiatric hospital, which does little for long term prospects, or directly in jail, which is a poor environment for their recovery. Moreover, since many municipalities have no line of sight or coordination between all the touchpoints in a patient’s journey, there are huge gaps and delays in providing them with critical care. Most end up back in jail which leads to increased costs and compromised outcomes. Harris Logic, a technology solutions and clinical services company, has been able to affect real change in behavioral health management by breaking this typical high utilizer cycle. In cities like Dallas, Austin, and Portland, Harris Logic created a robust data-fusion system that integrated patient records from behavioral health providers, managed care payers, pharmacies, Medicaid, and other government and criminal justice institutions, all while remaining HIPAA compliant. Using this system, Harris Logic can predict with a 99% degree of accuracy which individuals who would not return to jail and 77% accuracy those who would return in the absence of more concentrated care. Clinicians, who previously might not even have been notified if their client had a mental health event, now have a 360-degree view of each patient’s treatment and a powerful assessment as to the level of care required. This greatly enhanced Mental Health Diversion program not only cut costs down from $12,000 per incident lasting 24-72 hours to $10 a day, it reduces bed days in half, and recidivism rates by 5.5% (an incredibly large amount in this space). Now, 5-6 times the number of people who should not be in the criminal justice system are being diverted to community-based care whereas previously it would take almost a decade for patients to get the help they needed -- thereby lowering their risk of becoming a suicide statistic. Harris Logic’s system was made possible in conjunction with SAP technology that includes SAP HANA/Cloud, SAP Predictive Analytics, SAP Business Intelligence, and SAP BusinessObjects. SAP’s technology foundation allows for a fast and scalable infrastructure that can handle large amounts of data from various streams in conjunction with live analytics which gives every clinician real time information. Its UX environment ensures clinicians can concentrate on the task at hand. Furthermore, data discovery and machine learning allows for model retraining and updates so that Harris Logic’s care assessments remain highly insightful. Ultimately, Harris Logic’s application is better for hospitals, doctors, patients, and the criminal justice system. Most importantly, it saves lives.
