A new visual language defines enterprise AI
Creating confidence through clarity with SAP’s latest visual theme for Joule Work

Over the past several years, the visual language of enterprise software has undergone a shift in tone. As AI capabilities have accelerated and become increasingly embedded into product ecosystems, interfaces themselves have begun changing in response. In many cases, intelligence is being expressed visually through heightened stimulation: glowing gradients, layered surfaces, atmospheric effects, animated transitions, and increasingly conversational interaction models intended to make systems feel dynamic, responsive, and alive. There is an understandable excitement driving much of this work, particularly as organizations attempt to establish a visual language for a new generation of intelligent products.
However, many enterprise environments are already cognitively dense spaces. The people using these systems are not casually browsing lightweight applications. They are navigating operational complexity, managing large amounts of information, making decisions quickly, and working across interconnected workflows that already require sustained attention and expertise. In these environments, the introduction of AI creates an important design tension. How do you make intelligence visible without increasing noise? How do you communicate responsiveness, assistance, and capability without overwhelming the interface itself? And perhaps most importantly, how do you create trust?
These questions became central to our process designing a new theme for SAP’s engagement layer experience, Joule Work, announced at the 2026 Sapphire conference. The goal was not simply to create a new aesthetic direction or to establish a more contemporary visual treatment for AI-enabled products. The challenge was deeper and more structural than that. We were attempting to define a visual language capable of making intelligence feel tangible in a way that aligned with the expectations of enterprise users — people who rely on software not as entertainment, but as infrastructure for thinking, decision-making, and work.
Exploring a new visual language to express the Autonomous Enterprise
Very early in the process, we realized that many of the prevailing visual patterns emerging around AI were not aligned with the type of experience we wanted to create. Much of the broader industry language surrounding intelligent systems has leaned toward spectacle and expressiveness, often relying on visual futurism to signal innovation. Yet in enterprise contexts, trust is rarely built through novelty. More often, trust emerges through clarity, consistency, predictability, and composure. The interface must communicate competence before it communicates personality.
This realization began shaping the principles that ultimately guided the theme. The work initially centered around three foundational ideas: precision, approachability, and trust. These principles sound relatively straightforward when described at the brand level but translating them into interface behavior proved far more complex. What does trust actually look like when expressed through hierarchy, spacing, containment, or depth? How do you make intelligence feel approachable without making the system feel casual or overly simplified? How do you preserve warmth and humanity while still respecting the expertise of the people using the product?
Answering these questions required us to move beyond conventional theming discussions and into broader explorations around semiotics, perception, and interaction psychology. We spent considerable time examining how visual systems influence cognitive load and emotional interpretation long before users consciously evaluate an interface. We explored the relationship between enterprise credibility and intelligent assistance, as well as the ways visual structure can either reinforce or undermine confidence. Throughout the process, one idea emerged, which ultimately became one of the defining philosophies of the system: clarity itself has emotional value.
A visual theme grounded in function
The objective was never minimalism for its own sake, nor was it an attempt to strip away personality or expressiveness. Instead, the goal was to create a sense of calm precision where users could focus their cognitive energy on their work rather than on interpreting the interface. In practice, this meant embracing restraint very intentionally. Flat surfaces, controlled hierarchy, neutral canvases, and carefully moderated use of color and depth became central to the experience. Structure itself began carrying much of the communicative weight that decorative treatments often attempt to solve through visual intensity.
The resulting aesthetic sits somewhere between enterprise reliability and intelligent approachability. Refined blues establish continuity and confidence across the system, while calm neutral surfaces allow information and workflows to remain primary. The enterprise blue carries the surface of the experience, while the Joule color becomes reserved for moments where intelligence actively speaks within the interface. Nothing exists purely for ornamentation. Each visual decision is expected to communicate purpose.
One of the more important conceptual shifts during this work involved rethinking containment. Modern enterprise interfaces frequently default to placing every piece of content within visible cards, panels, or bounded surfaces, often regardless of whether those boundaries contribute meaningful structure. Over time, containment becomes habitual rather than intentional, and interfaces begin accumulating unnecessary visual segmentation. We wanted to challenge that pattern by instead using hierarchy, spacing, alignment, and rhythm to communicate structure. This allows the whitespace to serve as a form of containment by creating deliberate moments of visual breathing room, making the system feel more composed and confident.
Only the beginning of SAP’s visual evolution
What has emerged from the initial process is a visual theme for SAP’s Joule Work that is grounded in composure. The interface does not attempt to constantly announce intelligence through gimmicky motion, texture, or spectacle. Instead, intelligence is expressed through confidence, structure, precision, and restraint. It serves as an exploration into what AI interfaces might look like if they prioritized cognitive clarity over visual stimulation. And further, it has helped to lay a solid foundation for evolving UX for the Autonomous Enterprise.
As AI continues to become more deeply integrated into enterprise systems, the challenge will not simply be to design interfaces that appear more intelligent but to design systems that are trustworthy enough to support increasingly complex forms of collaboration between humans and machines. In that environment, clarity is no longer merely an aesthetic preference but a part of the product’s behavioral language itself.
