The following questions might help you determine whether you should or should not use a screenshot:
- Does my screenshot add value to the description or is the step obvious enough that we can expect customers to master it without additional visual help?
- Is your tutorial a beginner or an advanced tutorial? In general, more advanced tutorials need less screenshots because users are more experienced.
- Do you really need the entire screen or can you zoom in and only display a part of the screen to make the information more digestible?
- Is your screenshot a log on screen? Again, ask yourself if you really need this screenshot.
- Is your screenshot a confirmation message? If yes, rethink whether you need to visually support that message or whether it might be easier to tell the customer that they will receive some sort of confirmation. Messages like these tend to change, so by omitting these screenshots you make sure that your tutorial stays up to date longer.
- Does my screenshot depict marketing information, advertisements, promos, and such, that might become outdated quickly? Rethink adding that screenshot.
