Overview

UI and UX patterns appear when similar problems get similar solutions. Applying standard practices in BTP tools is one of the biggest drivers of UX consistency and quality. In addition, patterns have the added value of reusability across products.

Legacy Guidelines

The BTP Experience Toolkit aims to provide design guidelines harmonized with the latest version of the SAP Design System. This harmonization is a process, and older guidelines (marked with Pre-Horizon) will coexist with the already updated ones. Additionally, the previous version of the guidelines remains valid for products not adopting the latest version of the SAP Design System.

Best Practices

There are many patterns in use in BTP tools. The purpose of these guidelines is to organize them and provide consistent guidance on usage. All BTP patterns follow the foundational principles of being compliant to standards, organized, repeatable and reusable.

Actions and Placement

Action placement is a UX Consistency Standard. Within that standard, we provide specific BTP guidance on placing global, page, and contextual actions. You can also find advice on what actions are recommended and how to organize and name them.

In-Page Navigation

Navigation in complex products is always a challenge. A good representation of the navigation hierarchy is crucial for giving people a sense of where they are. Typically such secondary forwards and backward navigation options are presented by breadcrumbs, direct list or card selection, or the browser back button.

Content Creation and Editing

Content creation and editing are the main functions of any application. Doing it consistently across multiple applications requires rules and patterns in that space. Whether that is a form, guided wizard creation, or a simple in-place edit, we have it covered.

System Feedback

When interacting with a product, the underlying software systems are performing operations. These operations must provide the user with feedback on their progress and status. Using such feedback consistently will make them feel comfortable interpreting the data and taking action.

Security

A cornerstone of any product. A clear path of action when users sign in to the application, coupled with state-of-the-art security features, makes a positive impression on any user.
