Unlocking northeast India’s hydrocarbon potential through digitalization

Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) is a joint venture between five Indian public sector giants: GAIL (India) Limited, Indian Oil Corp Limited, Oil India Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., and Numaligarh. Its mission is to boost the gas-based economy across northeast India by improving access to clean energy and supporting economic development in the region through the development and operation of a robust natural gas pipeline.

Spanning 1,656 kilometers (1,029 miles) and connecting eight northeastern states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, the natural gas pipeline network will be connected to the national grid. Thereafter, it will support the availability of sustainable and clean energy solutions for industries, households, and transportation in the region.

Amid the global push for clean energy and sustainable solutions creating disruption in the natural gas and energy infrastructure industry, IGGL seized the opportunity to take proactive action. To optimize its development operations for innovation while minimizing risk, the joint venture company set about recalibrating its pipeline monitoring, safety systems, and energy efficiency operations for a digital world.

Moving to the cloud provides 24x7 surveillance by experienced security professionals, both digitally and physically. And thanks to standardized security configurations and continuous updates and patching, we’ve liberated our IT team from the repetitive work of manual security updates.

Shoring up its leading player status in clean energy

Intent on streamlining and standardizing business processes across everything from project management to financial operations to enable better decision-making from real-time data analytics, IGGL made the strategic decision to transform with RISE with SAP.

RISE with SAP offers a clear migration path to the cloud, combining SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, advanced analytics, and embedded AI capabilities in a transformation-as-a-service offering. Providing cloud flexibility and cost efficiency with a focus on integrated processes and automation, IGGL liked how the solution’s standard capabilities aligned with industry requirements and best practices recommended by SAP. IGGL’s transformation team prioritized deploying modules for materials management, project system, sales and distribution, and finance and controlling using the SAP Activate methodology. This offering proved instrumental in efficiently configuring processes to reflect industry standards. The company also took advantage of the SAP Advanced Deployment service package for SAP S/4HANA to accelerate time to value with preconfigured services, methodologies, accelerators, and knowledge.

And for the implementation, IGGL worked with Indigi Consulting & Solutions Pvt. Ltd. because of the partner’s proven understanding of the SAP solution portfolio and ability to tailor the implementation to IGGL’s unique requirements. The partner selection proved to be prescient, not only helping deliver the project on time but also making sure it aligned with the organization’s objectives. This included bringing together employees from five different companies under the IGGL joint venture. So Indigi Consulting drew on SAP Services and Support offerings to align different stakeholders through discovery workshops, gap analysis sessions, and collaborative focus groups to help ensure a smooth transition. Even after the implementation was completed, change management strategies and end-user training facilitated organization-wide adoption and minimized resistance to the new technology environment.

Our total implementation time was 120 days. Use of the SAP Advanced Deployment service package for SAP S/4HANA reduced our implementation time by 30% to 40%.

Leading the way through real-time, data-driven decision-making

The migration to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition through RISE with SAP marked the start of IGGL’s digital business, enabling it to streamline operations across its locations.

Ajay Singh Patel, head of IT and ERP at IGGL, who led the large-scale transformation initiative, says that the project delivered substantial wins across the company. He comments, “With access to real-time financial data, our executives can make timelier and data-informed decisions that help us respond more effectively to market conditions.”

In the area of project monitoring and budget tracking, automated cost and revenue calculations have made project budget tracking more accurate. With a single, integrated system and uniform processes, the use of digital tools simplifies comparing planned, actual, and committed data, enhancing IGGL’s ability to plan and estimate next year’s budgets with greater precision.

Likewise, there’s improved efficiency in finance operations, with key processes such as accounts payable and accounts receivable, reporting, taxation, and regulatory filing now more efficient, minimizing delays and reducing errors. This has led to faster month-end and year-end closes that underpin the company’s financial health and compliance.

Through digitalization, IGGL has eliminated manual reconciliation requirements, reduced time spent on auditing and compliance, and delivered substantial time savings and productivity gains in accounts payable and invoicing departments. There are also streamlined inventory reconciliation processes and a significantly reduced effort required for reconciling capital expenditure.

In terms of its procurement operations, by automating routine procurement tasks related to purchase requisitions, orders, invoice processing, and approvals, IGGL reduced process work and errors, leading to increased cost savings. The integrated procure-to-pay process has helped speed up procurement cycles, improving response times and on-time deliveries. Meanwhile, automated compliance checks and audit trails smooth adherence to both internal policies and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of noncompliance.

And since integrating SAP Business AI, IGGL has delivered additional improvements across key business areas. For example, automated workflows have reduced processing times in finance, procurement, and customer service. The use of predictive analytics has optimized resource allocation, leading to better demand forecasting and inventory management and ultimately lowering operational costs.

We now have access to real-time financial data that allows executives to make timely, informed decisions that were not possible before. And the integration between procurement and finance processes has made it possible to manage operations more holistically, which was previously difficult with disconnected systems.

Making significant strides ahead of the market

In the next stage of IGGL’s transformation journey, the company is looking to deploy the SAP File Lifecycle Management package to enable a digitalized way to move files, documents, and correspondence.

Elsewhere, IGGL sees an increasingly strategic role for AI in its operations. This includes expanding SAP Business AI into advanced analytics, supply chain optimization, and intelligent automation. The company is interested in enhancing customer interactions through AI-enabled chatbots and intelligent document processing and wants to tailor AI solutions to sector-specific challenges. IGGL also sees the potential that AI offers for real-time business adaptation to help ensure it stays ahead of market dynamics.
